English version below

Naast de solemneel klinkende Pavane for Viola and string Orchestra van Arne Werkman, horen we het Concerto for Viola and Orchestra van Jan Koetsier.

English version

Dutch Hidden Gems is the apt title of viola player Dana Zemtsov’s new album.

Viola player Dana Zemtsov has already proven on her albums Enigma and Silhouettes that she is an inspired musician. She grew up in a viola environment. Her parents, uncle and cousin are violists. She studied with Michael Kugel, among others, of whom she also plays the Prelude – Ysaye on her album Enigma. On her new CD Dutch Hidden Gems we hear her in compositions by ‘forgotten Dutch composers’: Henk Badings, Jan Koetsier, Henriette Bosmans and Arne Werkman. Of the latter she played the Suite for Viola and Piano, Op. 51 I. on the album Silhouettes. A CD she recorded with pianist Anna Fedorova in 2020.

The album Dutch Hidden Gems opens with the beautiful Viola Concerto by Badings. A composer with a large and versatile oeuvre of diverse styles and line-ups. This versatility is reflected in his Viola Concerto from 1965. Badings‘ music displays a palette of expressiveness, which is colorfully performed for Dana Zemtsov, accompanied by Phion, the Orkest van Gelderland and Overijssel conducted by Shizuo Kuwahara. This expressiveness and drama can also be found in BadingsSonata for Viola and Piano, where Zemtsov’s rich and intense playing is virtuosoly accompanied by pianist Anna Fedorova. In addition to the solemn Pavane for Viola and String Orchestra by Arne Werkman, we hear the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Jan Koetsier. A composer who was born in Amsterdam, but studied in Germany and lived and worked there for most of his life. His Concerto has fine late-romantic influences with beautiful, melodious themes which are dynamic played. The album closes with impressionistic and romantic Arietta by Henriette Bosmans for viola and piano. Dutch Hidden Gems is an splendid album where the hidden wonderful music finally see the light. Exciting music!
