The music of The Hossein Alizadeh en het Rembrandt Trio starts where the light meets the dark, where the day turns into the night and loud and soft tones gently take care of each other. On the album Same self, same silence we hear new composed work by Alizadeh / Frerichs / Overwater in a crossover of Arabic / Western music that is performed by four great musicians. Top Iranian musician Hossein Alizadeh is a grand master of the tar, Iranian long-neck lute. On this album Same self, same silence we hear him on the shurangiz, also a long neck lute from Iran. Rembrandt Frerichs plays the fortepiano (with quarter tones) specially designed for him and harmonium. We hear double bassist Tony Overwater on the violone, a six-string bass with (adjustable) frets and percussionist Vinsent Planjer plays the whisper kit. The title of the CD Same self, same silence refers to an Iranian poem in which the broadening of musical horizons is the starting point. Where harmony is created by listening carefully, respecting and complementing each other. Really beautiful is the sparkling playing of Alizadeh on the shurangiz. He makes the instrument vibrate so fragile, supplemented with beautiful vibrato and fast tremolos. The fortepiano has sound characteristics of the santur (dulcimer) and excels with a twinkling beauty (Kereshmeh), in addition to the violone (both pizzicato’s and con arco) in unison themes and beautifully phrased solos (like in Same), firmly supported by the percussion- kit including the tombak (vase drum), bendir (frame drum) and bells (great performed in tight interplay Neyshaburak). The music on Same self, same silence has a wonderful beauty. Narrative music, balanced with calmness and serenity. Almost elusive, but still so tangible.
