English version below

English version

From a musically universal point of view, the two Flemish musicians Didier Laloy (diatonic accordion) and violinist Damien Chierici recorded the wonderfull album MAELSTROM.

In 2018 accordionist Didier Laloy and violinist Damien Chierici met each other during the recording of a folk-oriented album of Nirvana songs. It became clear that their mutual musical inspiration connects seamlessly. This results in a duo collaboration and the album Maelstrom, which also features keyboardist Quentin Nguyen and drummer Olivier Cox.

Although the lockdowns made all international musical journeys of discovery impossible, an inner journey turned out to be possible way. The result can now be heard on Maelstrom. Sometimes in a musical momentum, then rather slowly, but always energetic, adventurous and full of self-confidence. Broken Leaf, for example, is a jazz-rock piece with a minimal music-like flair. We hear jazz-rock influences in Vikhren, this time interspersed with a Bulgarian rhythm and Oriental colors, and Cabestan’Go is a musical journey around the world, both geographically and historically, in just over four minutes.

The Maelstrom album is full of original pieces with accessible and recognizable themes. But it is mainly the development, variations and the ingenious use of styles, rhythms and harmonies that makes the music so original. This occurs sometimes so unexpectedly and abruptly, that you are carried away in a musical whirlwind, a ‘maelstrom’ of inventiveness. That will be no concern for the average listener, who will hear inventive music that in its colorful multiplicity becomes authentic again and so a style in itself.
