English version below

English version

Time Crawls is the endearingly beautiful album by the Flemish composer and recorder player Jowan Merckx, which he recorded with the ensemble Zefiro Torna.

The Flemish musician Jowan Merckx was initially self-taught on the recorder, but in 1996 he obtained his diploma at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. He is a researcher, a musical adventurer who ventures into many fields of music. In 2000 he founded his ensemble Amorroma, where he collaborated with baroque harpist Sarah Louise Ridy. He composes, performs and can be found as a guest musician with folk singer Wannes Van de Velde, the women’s trio Laïs and the Northern Spanish company Ialma. Zefiro Torna is a project-based organization that revives (early) music for a wide audience in various settings in a theatrical setting, where music, theatre, dance and literature merge into a dazzling performance.

For the new album Time Crawls, Jowan Merckx composed pieces that caress, amaze and which move. Work that harks back to folk music and Baroque Europe, superbly arranged by Marnix de Cat and Martin Valcke. Merckx’s pieces are warm and melodic. In a broad format of recorder, violin, viola da Gamba, harp and lute we hear a kind of chamber folk music in various formations. Norwegian folk can be heard in Klapka & les Oiseaux á l’Aurore, klezmer feel in Time Crawls or even a light Oriental color in Charbel. The pieces sound original, candid and fresh and are played with verve and depth. Lovely music to listen to in a theater or to dance to during a folk festival or balfolk.
