Legacy+ is het dubbelalbum van de zoon en kleinzoon Femi & Made Kuti van de legendarische Nigeriaanse saxofonist en mega-muzikant Fela Kuti (1938 – 1997).

Femi & Made Kuti, vader en zoon dus, slaan een muzikale brug tussen de Afro-beat van Fela Kuti naar de muziek van de toekomst. Sinds de jaren ’70 mixt Fela Kuti Highlife melodieën, Yoruba zang, stevige funk en jazz tot de markante Afro Jazz. Zijn zoon Femi, die nu 58 jaar oud is, trad jarenlang op in de traditie van de muziek van zijn vader, die ook te horen is op de eerste CD (Stop the Hate) van dit dubbel-album Legacy+. Een album vol protest-muziek met teksten over het Strijden voor een beter leven, Privatisering, Stop the Hate en Corruptie. De arrangementen zijn verpakt in groovy polyritmische ritmes, strakke funky gitaar- en blazer-riffs, voor- en nazang en soepele solo’s. Femi Kuti, die naast zanger ook organist en blazer is, wordt bijgestaan door een dozijn musici. De muziek klinkt organisch en veerkrachtig met een enorme drive en een hoog dansgehalte. Door de herhaling van de thema’s en riffs (met de fantastische baritone saxofoon) wordt de muziek, net zoals die van Fela Kuti, hypnotiserend en zeer krachtig.

De muziek van zoon Made Kuti vinden we op CD-2 (For(e)ward). Hij is nu 25 jaar, heeft Fela Kuti niet gekend want hij was 2 jaar toen Fela stierf. Wel kent hij uiteraard zijn muziek. Als kind trad hij op met zijn vader Femi en kreeg daarmee de stijl met de-paplepel-ingegoten. De stijl muziek die nu als een Legacy doorklinkt in zijn composities, te horen dus op het tweede album. Made Kuti is een brilliante multi-instrumentalist. Hij componeerde, net zoals zijn vader op CD-1, alle stukken en bespeelt bovendien alle instrumenten. Bas, drums (inclusief percussie), gitaar, piano, keyboards en alle blazers heeft Made zelf ingespeeld. Het resultaat is fantastisch. Bedenk hierbij dat de muziek in de geest van Fela Kuti een live-karakter moet behouden, soepel en vrij moet klinken. Dat is Made absoluut gelukt. Daarbij klinkt zijn muziek moderner, experimenteert hij met polyfone en repeterende zang, blazers-arrangementen en gaat zijn muziek meer richting pop.

Legacy+ is the double album by the son and grandson Femi & Made Kuti of the legendary Nigerian saxophonist and mega-musician Fela Kuti (1938 – 1997).

Femi & Made Kuti, father and son, build a musical bridge between the Afro beat of Fela Kuti and the music of the future. Since the 1970s, Fela Kuti has been mixing Highlife melodies, Yoruba vocals, heavy funk and jazz into the striking Afro Jazz. For years his son Femi, now 58 years old, performed in the tradition of his father’s music, which can also be heard on the first CD (Stop the Hate) of this double album Legacy+. An album full of protest music with lyrics about Fighting for a Better Life, Privatization, Stop the Hate and Corruption. This packed in groovy polyrhythmic rhythms, tight funky guitar and brass riffs, call and respond vocals and smooth solos. Femi Kuti, who is not only a singer, but also an organist and wind player, is accompanied by a dozen musicians. The music sounds organic and resilient with an enormous drive and a high dance content. The repetition of the themes and riffs (with the lovely baritone saxophone) makes the music lively, just like Fela Kuti’s music, hypnotic and very powerful.

The music by (grand)son Made Kuti can be found on CD-2 (For(e)ward). He is now 25 years old and was 2 years when Fela died. As a child he already performed with his father Femi. The style of music that now resounds like a Legacy in his compositions, can be heard on the second album. Made Kuti is a brilliant multi-instrumentalist. Like his father (on CD-1), he composed all the pieces and also plays all the instruments. Made played bass, drums (including percussion), guitar, piano, keyboards and all wind instruments. The result is fantastic. Keep in mind that in the spirit of Fela Kuti: the music must retain a lively character, sound smooth and free. Made absolutely succeeded. In addition, his music sounds modern, he experiments with polyphonic and repetitive vocals, wind arrangements and his music moves more towards pop.
