Zanger Vusa Mkhaya draait al heel wat jaren mee binnen de Zimbabwaanse muziek-scene. Dat doet hij weliswaar vanuit Wenen, wat tegenwoordig zijn woonplaats is, maar het repertoire op zijn nieuwe album Umanyanyatha (Hij die van dansen en zingen houdt) blijft onmiskenbaar Afrikaans.

In 2004 start Vusa Mkhaya zijn groep Insinghizi in Bulawayo, een stad in centraal Zimbabwe. Een a-capella groep die later opereert vanuit Wenen. Als de groep in 2005 de Radio France World Music Award wint en in 2009 hun tweede album op de markt brengt, besluit Vusa Mkhaya in 2012 zijn eerste solo-album Vocalism uit te brengen. Na zijn 2de solo-album The Spirit of Ubuntu uit 2016, is er dan nu zijn derde, zeer inspirerende album Umanyanyatha. Op deze persoonlijke plaat horen we veel zelf geschreven stukken die aansluiten bij zijn dagelijks (Afrikaanse) leven. Over het Afrika en het Zimbabwe van vandaag. Het land waar hij van houdt (Lizobuya), wees trots op je geschiedenis (Ubuntu), de tradities en gebruiken (Kudala), de reiziger (Abalalanga) of de liefde, die bezongen wordt in Uthando. Het album opent met een ode aan zijn grootmoeder: “Zij was een een geweldige vrouw. Ze had nauwelijks opleiding genoten, maar ze was een van de meest intelligente vrouwen die ik ken”, zingt Vusa in het schitterende a-capella openingslied Mayibabo. Vusa Mkhaya heeft een warm en vol stemgeluid met een hees randje (prachtig in Lalela, met fraai achtergrondzang Duduzile Sibanda en Heather Dube). Bovendien straalt zijn stem rust en kalmte uit. Hij wordt in wisslende bezetting bijgestaan door zo’n 14 musici op (bas)gitaar, percussie, keyboards en achtergrondzang. Bijzonder is de viola da gamba in Ubuntu en het sobere Siyeza met gitaarbegeleiding van Roman Schwendt, die ook de muziek componeerde. Umanyanyatha staat voor Hij die van dansen en zingen houdt. Dat klopt en dat doet hij subtiel, weloverwogen en met liefde.

In 2004 Vusa Mkhaya started his group Insinghizi in Bulawayo, a city in central Zimbabwe. An a-cappella group that later operates from Vienna. When the group won the Radio France World Music Award in 2005 and releases their second album in 2009, Vusa Mkhaya decided to release his first solo album Vocalism in 2012. After his scond album The Spirit of Ubuntu Mkhaya released his third album Umanyanyatha. A very inspiring one. On this personal record we hear many self-written pieces that tells about his daily (African) life. About Africa and Zimbabwe of today. The land he loves (Lizobuya), be proud of your history (Ubuntu), the traditions and customs (Kudala), the traveler (Abalalanga) or the love song Uthando. The album opens with a tribute to his grandmother: “She was a wonderful woman. She had hardly any education, but she was one of the most intelligent women I know”. Vusa sings about her in the beautiful a-capella opening song Mayibabo. Vusa Mkhaya has a warm and full voice with a hoarse edge (beautiful in Lalela, with wonderful background vocals Duduzile Sibanda and Heather Dube). Moreover, his voice radiates peace and tranquility. He is assisted in varies line-up by around 14 musicians on (bass) guitar, percussion, keyboards and backing vocals. Special is the viola da gamba in Ubuntu and the sober song Siyeza with only guitar accompaniment played by Roman Schwendt. He also composed the music. Umanyanyatha stands for He who loves to dance and sing. That’s right, in Vusa Mkhaya’s way: subtle, deliberate and with love.
