English version below

English version

The South African singer and guitarist Bongeziwe Mabandla became one of the best representative of South African Afro-folk. In a mix of contemporary folk and urban grooves we hear him on his new third album Iimini (Days).

Bongeziwe Mabandla is not a newcomer of the South African music scene. He released his debut Umlilo in 2012. For this album he received a nomination for the South African Music Award. With this nomination he has proven to be a great musician, composer and singer. Some of the artists who have received a South African Music Award in the past include the innovative band Freshlyground, the great trumpet player Hugh Masekela, singer Busi Mhlongo, the sympathetic pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and singer Mariam Makeba. In 1967 Makeba had a world wide hit with the Click Song. Sung in Xhosa, also the language of Bongeziwe Mabandla. He truly is a folk artist. Singer with guitar with fresh melodies, put in open arrangements, sometimes a bit melancholic, such as the beautiful Zange and the great song Khangela. But there is much more. He enriches his music with electronics (effects), drum machine (loops), keyboards and lovely polyphonic vocals. The arrangements are varied and no song has the same structure. This way of making music presents a versatile album. In addition, Bongeziwe has a beautifully clear voice and regularly uses his falsetto voice with a lot of reverb. That gives the music an enormous range and a broad sound. Terrific and sometimes even hallucinatory. Initially, Bongeziwe Mabandla had moved to Johannesburg to become an actor. Since that career did not go smoothly, he decided to become a musician. Yes indeed, his third album Iimini is the convincing proof!
