Confluences heet het nieuwe album van pianist Stanislav Borisov. Een in Sofia (Bulgarije) geboren musicus die via Griekenland in Nederland terecht kwam en hier zijn pianostudie voltooide. Op dit enerverende trio-album horen we hem in een jazz/Bulgaarse combinatie met bassist Arturo Valero en drummer César de Frias.

Stanislav Borisov begint met piano spelen als hij 6 jaar oud is en studeert aanvankelijk veel Bulgaarse muziek van o.a. Filip Koutev. Deze musicoloog en componist richtte begin jaren ’50 het State Ensemble for Folk Song and Dance op. Voor dit staats-ensemble arrangeerde hij volksmuziek die hij opnam en noteerde van de lokale bevolking op het Bulgaarse platteland. Bovendien is Filip Koutev de ontwikkelaar van de schitterende Bulgaarse polyfonie, met de zo karakteristieke snijdende harmonieën. In de jaren ’70 werd deze stijl vooral bekend door Lès Mystere des Voix Bulgare.
Stanislav Borisov woont jarenlang in Griekenland waar hij geïnteresseerd raakt in jazz en geimproviseerde muziek van o.a. Keith Jarrett en Herbie Hancock en Michel Camilo (zoals het openings-track Barcelona). Hij verhuist naar Nederland waar hij zijn jazz-studie afrondt en CD’s uitbrengt. Waaronder een samenwerking met de groep Aurora Clara van gitarist Raul Mannola waarmee hij het enerverende album Transformation opneemt.
Op Confluences horen we een heel andere Borisov. In zijn eigen composities horen we melodisch, verzorgd spel en vooral zo Bulgaars. Het is die cross-over die geweldig mooi en intrigerend is. De onregelmatige maatsoort 7/8, altijd zo fraai verweven in de Bulgaarse muziek. De Bulgaarse tonaliteit die hij mengt met west-Europese jazz-harmonieën. Prachtig vertolkt in Inevitable Nature, Barcelona (weliswaar een 5-tels maat) en Inspiration. En dan nog het titelstuk Confluences. Deze compositie kenmerkt zich door een aantal korte stukken achter elkaar, waardoor het lijkt op een soort Bulgaarse Suite. Al deze werken zijn van grote kwaliteit en maken van Confluences een pracht-album. In zijn solo’s neemt Stanislav Borisov je inventief mee in een glooiend muzikaal landschap dat even over het thema danst, erover varieert en dan weer wegdrijft naar verder-afliggende (en soms modale) akkoorden. Het Stan iB Trio straalt een zelfverzekerdheid uit. Coherent, strak en hecht samenspel. Een samenwerking die eer doet aan de titel van dit innovatieve album samenvloeiing Confluences!

The new album by pianist Stanislav Borisov Stan iB Trio is called Confluences. He was born in Sofia (Bulgaria) but ended up in the Netherlands via Greece and completed his studies here in the Netherlands. On this exciting trio album we hear him in a jazz / Bulgarian combination with bassist Arturo Valero and drummer César de Frias.
Stanislav Borisov started playing the piano when he was 6 years old. He initially studied a lot of Bulgarian music by, among others, Filip Koutev. This musicologist and composer founded the State Ensemble for Folk Song and Dance in the early 1950s. For this state ensemble he arranged folk music which he recorded and noted from the locals in the Bulgarian countryside. Moreover, he is the developer of the beautiful Bulgarian polyphony, with the characteristic harmonies. In the 1970s, this style was best known by Lès Mystere des Voix Bulgare.
For years Stanislav Borisov lived in Greece where he became interested in jazz and improvised music by Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Michel Camilo (as we can hear in the opening piece Barcelona). He moved to the Netherlands where he finished his jazz studies and released CDs. Including a collaboration with the group Aurora Clara of guitarist Raul Mannola with which he records the exciting album Transformation.

On the album Confluences there is a completely different Borisov. In his own compositions we hear melodic, well-kept playing and with an especially Bulgarian mix. It’s that crossover that is so incredible nice and intriguing. The irregular time signature 7/8, always so beautifully woven into Bulgarian music and the Bulgarian tonality which he mixes with Western European jazz harmonies. Excellent performed in Inevitable Nature, Barcelona (a 5-beat), Inspiration and the title piece Confluences. This composition is characterized by a number of short pieces of music in succession, makes it sound like a kind of Bulgarian Suite. These works are of great quality and make Confluences a splendid album. In his solos, Stanislav Borisov takes you inventively into rolling musical landscape that dances for a moment on the theme, varies it and then drifts away to more distant (and sometimes modal) chords. The Stan iB Trio radiates in self-confidence. Coherently and tight interplay. A collaboration that honours the title of this album Confluence!
