De Malinese singer songwriter Kankou Kouyate maakte met de Britse multi-muzikant Mark Mulholland het prachtige album ‘Kuma’. Samen met gastmuzikanten Olaf Hund en Vincent Bucher horen we een cross-over tussen West- en Noord Afrikaanse muziek met pop- en rockinvloeden.

Kankou Kouyate werd in 1993 geboren in Mali in een zeer muzikale familie Ze speelt en zingt traditioneel en modern repertoire waaronder jazz, blues, mandingue, bambara, Afrobeat, pop en rock. In 2013 werkte ze samen met Damon Albarn en Brian Eno aan het album Maison des Jeunes en het project Africa Express. In 2017 ontmoet ze in Bamako de Schotse multi-instrumentalist Mark Mulholland die al sinds 2014 in de hoofdstad woont. Met hem neemt ze het schitterende album ‘Kuma’ (Woorden in het Bambara) op. Een CD waarop de West- en Noord Afrikaanse muziek fantastisch wordt verweven met de westerse muziekinvloeden. Haar muziek heeft veelal dezelfde opbouw. Het steeds herhalen van hetzelfde muzikale fragment, aangevuld met variaties in de begeleiding. Dat werkt fantastisch en bezwerend. Inventief gebruik van akoestische gitaar in het schitterende Da en het country-aandoende Bin en Ko Da Koma of de elektrische variant in Kuma of Dimi met een vette knipoog naar de Touareg-muziek uit de Sahara. Naast (bas/slide)gitaar, orgel, banjo en bouzouki van Mulholland horen we gastmuzikant Vincent Bucher op mondharmonica met veel galm aangevuld met elektronica (synths en drumloops) van Olaf Hund. Zangeres Kankou Kuoyate heeft een heerlijk wendbare stem. Een warm timbre waarmee ze moeiteloos wisselt tussen de Malinese signatuur naar het Sahara idioom en zelfs de folk-georiënteerde kleur. Ze zingt over trouwen, eerlijkheid, het gebruik van wapens en natuurlijk de liefde. Over liefde zingt ze in Ne Bi Fe. Een loflied voor haar vader en familie in het algemeen. Op ‘Kuma’ horen we Afrikaanse muziek met een westers tintje of Westerse muziek met een Afrikaans tintje. Allebei goed en allebei prachtig!

Malian singer songwriter Kankou Kouyate made the beautiful album ‘Kuma’ with British multi-musician Mark Mulholland. Together with guest musician Olaf Hund and Vincent Bucher they play a crossover between West and North African music with pop and rock influences.
In a musical family Kankou Kouyate was born in Mali in 1993. She sings traditional and modern repertoire including jazz, blues, mandingue, bambara, Afrobeat, pop and rock. In 2013 she worked with Damon Albarn and Brian Eno on the album Maison des Jeunes and the Africa Express project. In 2017 she met the Scottish multi-instrumentalist Mark Mulholland in Bamako, who has been living in the capital since 2014. With him she recorded the beautiful album ‘Kuma’ (Words in Bambara). A CD on which the West and North African music is fantastically interwoven with the western music influences. Her compositions do have often has the same structure. Repeating the same musical fragment, supplemented with variations in the accompaniment. That works fantastic and enchanting. Inventive use of acoustic guitar in beautiful ‘Da’ and country-like ‘Bin’ and ‘Ko Da Koma’ or the electric version in ‘Kuma’ or ‘Dimi’ with a fine tune to Touareg music from the Sahara. Besides (bass / slide) guitar, organ, banjo and bouzouki, all played by Mulholland, we hear guest musician Vincent Bucher on harmonica with a fine reverb supplemented with electronics (synths and drum loops) from Olaf Hund. Singer Kankou Kuoyate has a wonderfully agile voice, a warm timbre with which she effortlessly changes between the Malian signature to the Sahara idiom and even folk-oriented. Her songs are about getting married, honesty, the use of weapons and of course love in the song ‘Ne Bi Fe’. A song of praise for her father and family in general. On the album ‘Kuma’ we hear ‘African music with a western twist’ or ‘Western music with an African twist’. Both ways are great and both ways are beautiful!
