Het ongelooflijke duo BartolomeyBittmann tovert een heel orkest uit de combinatie cello & viool/mandola. Deze twee musici benutten alle speelvormen van hun instrument en zijn voortreffelijk op elkaar ingespeeld. De muziek op hun 3de album ‘Dynamo’ is virtuoos, melodisch en energiek.

‘Dynamo’ is een krachtig album van twee bijzondere musici. Slechts drie instrumenten vormen de basis van hun muziek. Matthias Bartolomey bespeelt de cello en Klemens Bittman de viool en de mandola (soort grote mandoline). Diverse speeltechnieken worden volledig benut. Gestreken (con arco), pizzicato (tokkelen: ‘Dynamo’), akkoorden (o.a. arpeggio’s: zoals in ‘Viadukt’). Het komt allemaal in een sneltreinvaart voorbij. Bovendien wordt er zo nu en dan getrommeld op de klankkast van de cello en viool zoals te horen in ‘Krystallos’. Daarnaast horen we de combinatie van mandola en cello wat weer een nieuwe sensatie oplevert met een fraaie brede klankkleur. Al deze speeltechnieken worden innovatief gemengd en afgewisseld waardoor je je waant in een band-sensatie. Het lijkt alsof je naar meerdere instrumenten luistert, terwijl er ’toch’ maar 2 klinken. De trefzekerheid en de kunst van het weglaten is wat Matthias Bartolomey en Klemens Bittman tot in de puntjes beheersen. Absolute klasse en muzikaal vakmanschap. Bovendien zijn beiden heren voortreffelijke componisten die oor hebben voor melodie die afwisselend te horen is in de cello of viool. In enkele nummers (waaronder ‘Föhn’ en ‘Haim’) wordt fonetisch gezongen. ‘Dynamo’ opent met het Zuid-Afrikaans aandoende ‘Elephant’ dat met mono-ritmisch-mandola-spel krachtig wordt ondersteund door tremelo-techniek op de cello die vervolgens improviseert. ‘Neptun’ valt op door de ritmische opeenstapeling waarbij de cello en de viool elkaars ritmiek halveren of verdubbelen. Doortastende melancholie vinden we terug in ‘Glockenturm’, net zoals in ‘Menuett’, dat met een folk-invloed een prachtige afsluiter is. Dit Oostenrijkse duo is werkelijk een genot om naar te luisteren en een absolute aanrader voor elke avontuurlijke muziekliefhebber.

‘Dynamo’ is a powerful album by two special musicians. Only three instruments form the basis of their music. Matthias Bartolomey plays the cello and Klemens Bittman the violin and the mandola (kind of large mandolin). Various playing techniques are fully utilized. Bowed (con arco), pizzicato (strumming: ‘Dynamo’), chords (including arpeggios: as in ‘Viadukt’). All played rapidly and changed very quickly. Moreover, every now and then there are ‘drumming’ on the cello and violin as heard in ‘Krystallos’. In addition, we hear the combination of mandola and cello, which turns out be a new sensation with a beautiful broad sound. All these playing techniques are innovatively mixed and alternated. It seems like you are listening to more than two instruments, while ‘still’ there’s only the sound of two. It makes you feel you’re listening to a whole band. The accuracy and the art of omission is what Matthias Bartolomey and Klemens Bittman show in perfection. Absolute great and musical craftsmanship. And both gentlemen are excellent composers. Their music has a prefect melody that can be heard alternately in the cello or violin. In a few songs (including ‘Föhn’ and ‘Haim’), they sing phonetic words. The album ‘Dynamo’ opens with South African-composition ‘Elephant’, which is strongly supported by tremolo on the cello with mono-rhythmic mandola playing, followed with improvisations. ‘Neptun’ stands out for the rhythmic accumulation in which the cello and the violin halve or double each other’s rhythms. We find strong melancholy in ‘Glockenturm’, just like ‘Menuett’, which is a wonderful ending piece with a folk influence. This Austrian duo is truly a pleasure to listen to and an absolute must for every adventurous music lover.
