Once again singer / guitarist Anana Harouna and his band Kel Assouf have managed to release a great album with an exquisite mix of blues, rock and desert rock with mesmerizing guitar licks, call and response vocals and stirring rhythms. The poly rhythms that we encounter in a lot of African music, such as in the opening song ‘Fransa’, ‘America’ or ‘Ariyal’ where the three-beat bar is supported with a double two-beat measure, supplemented with variations. That gives a rhythmic duality with an exciting and uplifting energy that is further enhanced by the distorted guitars. ‘Black Tenere’ was recorded in trio form with Anana Harouna, the innovative keyboard work of Sofyann Ben Youssef and the vital drums of Olivier Penu. These three musicians provide a very musical metaphorical and oppressive warmth, where you can slowly feel the desert sand between your teeth or the sand scours in your shoes.  The authentic sound of ‘Black Tenere’ is partly due to the arsenal of vintage keyboards, guitars and percussion instruments which were provided by the Stureparken Studio in Stockholm. The place where this fantastic album was recorded.
