English version below

English version

Those who are impressed by the solo piano work of Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) can broaden their South African horizon with this new album ‘Cape Jazz – Piano’. A fantastic exposé of six pianists who play a lot of their own compositions, with a clear link to the South African music.

The South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) created a new South African music. He’s a pioneer in music from the Townships. His spontaneous way of piano playing, the use of specific (Gospel) harmonies and rhythms have given his music its own cachet. The same metier can be found on ‘Cape Jazz – Piano’, the fifth CD ‘Cape Jazz’ by Mountain Records where attention is paid to the rich South African music culture. On this album you can hear six wonderful pianists: Ebrahim Shihab from the band Pacific Express, the young classically trained Ramon Alexander, Mike Perry, solo pianist Hilton (Tony) Schilder (photo left), the London-based Mervyn Africa  and Kyle Shepherd (photo right) who plays the exciting piece ‘Dagga Party‘ on prepared piano. These great piano players all play solo works for piano. Pieces that excel in melody and rhythm, complemented by passages with jazz harmonies. Despite the music being very rhythmic, the pieces exude calm and transparency. The music is played very accurate and with great skill. Striking are ‘Spirit of the wind‘ (Mervyn Africa) with a beautiful ostinate rhythm; the wonderful harmonies in ‘Khoisan Symphony – Part 3′ (Hilton Schilder) and the varied ‘Kaapse Medley‘, played by Ramon Alexander. ‘Cape Jazz Piano’ is an inspiring album with high timeless content.
