 English version

Multi-musician Jowee Omicil presents his new CD ‘Love Matters!‘. A beautiful album of jazz cross-over with many influences. Omicil is mainly (reed) brass player and (co-) composer of the compositions on this new album that stretches musically from classical, to jazz and lovely ‘world’ sounds.

Jowee Omicil grew up in Montreal but studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and worked in New York. He’s the son of a Haitian emigrant and lives in Paris where he released his 6th album ‘Love Matters!‘. On the cover Jowee Omicil looks slightly stoic in the camera, but inside the CD box, he laughs broadly with trumpet, soprano and alto sax in his hand. A cheerfulness that is reflected in his music. The compositions are played with a flamboyant appearance in varying line-ups of predominantly bass, drums, (electric) piano with mostly his sax-work in the middle, supplemented with great bass and piano solos. The musical palette covers the South African music with which the album opens in an ode to the legendary Hugh Masakela, Caribbean colors in ‘Marie-Clémence‘, the juju-music of Fela Kuti in ‘Be Kuti‘, classical sounds in ‘Mozart Bash‘ and jazz waves in pieces like’ Waves of Monk‘ and the beautiful ode to Pharaoh Sanders in ‘Calm before the Storm‘ (with excellent drum work). Jowee Omicil selected some enthusiastic and determined musicians in an energetic exposé. On the album there are 13 pieces which are very different from each other, so you sometimes wonder if you’re listening to the same record. But precisely, this uncertainty gives this album its strength. The inventive arrangements and great instrument combinations (using tabla, djembe, hang and vocals) make ‘Love Matters!‘ a wonderful musical adventure.
