English version

Deran‘ is the wonderful new album by the Nigerian musician Bombino (Omara Moctar). He’s a member of the Tuareg, nomadic people who live in the north of the Sahara. Their music is (poly)-rhythmic rock / pop with raw guitars, a lot of use of call and response vocals and pentatonics melodies (based on the five tone scale) which gives the music it’s wonderfully specific timbre.

Bombino (Omara Moctar) was born in Niger in a Tuareg family, nomads in North Africa. He got his first guitar from his uncle Rissa Ixa. He learned to play the guitar from Haja Bebe and joined his band. As the youngest member of this group, Omara Moctar gets his nickname Bombino (small child). In 1994 the government of Niger signed a peace decree with the Tuaregs and Bombino returns to his native country. He became an actor in ‘Imuhar: A Legend‘. The great French producer Phillippe Eidel (Cheb Khaled) composed the music for this film. A kind of crossover music that also Bombino uses in his music. with the traditional Tuareg rhythms. These rhythms are played in a 3-beat-feel, through which a 2-part time signature is clapped simultaneously. This poly-rhythm is fantastic and gives the music a psychedelic touch such as the title piece ‘Deran Deran Alkheir‘ (Best Wishes) or ‘Tamasheq‘. In addition, we hear influences of blues and rock. Reggae is present in ‘Tehigren‘ (Trees) with in the intro a tsreed, the high female vocal voice that is an announcement for an important event. The tsreed we also encounter at weddings where the guests are alerted of the arrival of the bride and groom. Bombino sings in the Tamasheq about the Tuareg population, relationships, nature and of course about love. His music is pure, sometimes raw and unpolished, but everything is perfectly under control. This spontaneity makes his music so contagious and worthwhile. Splendid music!
