English version

Trio Monsieur Doumani from Cyprus brings lively music on their third album ‘Angathin’. The group was founded in 2011 in the capital Nicosia by Antonis Antoniou (tzouras, kind of bouzouki), Angelos Ionas (guitar) and Demetris Yiasemides (trombone, flute).

Probably a very few people have heard of Monsieur Doumani. A trio from Nicosia (Cyprus) that shows how you can vibrate the atmosphere against a Cypriot folk background with only two string instruments and one brass player. Mostly newly written pieces, sung in a Cypriot dialect by Antonis Antoniou who’s besides a tzouras player also the singer. We already met him in the neo-rebetiko group Trio Tekke. Monsieur Doumani has a circus-like approach to their music where the three instruments are equally important and melodic lines interlock and complement each other. And, even more important, the musical suggestion is nicely hidden between the notes, so you hear more than there actually sounds. Fresh, funky groovy music, light of timbre and very dance-able (note the irregular time signatures). The strong compositions, sophisticated arrangements with unexpected stops, time changes and beautiful alternate chords make ‘Angathin’ a fantastic album.
