English version below

English version

At the end of October the Dutch jazz pianist Edwin Berg presented his solo CD ‘Bach & Berg‘. In addition to many new inspiring compositions we hear a crossover between the music of J.S. Bach in the interpretation of Edwin Berg. He shines a new light on the works of this Baroque composer and put them in a wonderful atmosphere!

Edwin Berg is a lyricist who shows the importance of the melody. His compositions are ‘songs‘, indeed, but the melodies are hidden in a landscape of arpeggios with beautiful chords (now and then accompanied by his softly singing voice). Sometimes quiet music; as in ‘20‘ or ‘Be flat‘, but also impetuous with the almost ‘growling‘ left hand in ‘Doei Doei Domenico‘ (‘Bye Bye Domenico’), with an eye wink to Domenico Scarlatti. Very particular how Berg turns a little tune like ‘Nean’ into a sparkling arpeggio sound, from very subtle into a huge musical atmosphere. Something similar can be found in the pieces composed by Bach. The opening piece for example, Bach’s ‘8th Invention‘, come’s up like a waterfall of tones and disappears after a short reciting fragment slowly out of sight. Challenging and stunningly beautiful! Although the pieces by Bach are clearly recognizable, the title ‘Bach & Berg‘ doesn’t cover the music of this album. Erwin Berg is a wonderful improviser to the few works by the Baroque master, but his own compositions do not sound like Bach. These are more relevant to the music of Jasper van’t Hof, Philip Glass and Wim Mertens. In his own compositions Berg easily touches the heart of the music with just few notes. In this way he creates a beautiful sound that appeals to your imagination and and makes your heart beat faster!
