Wat is er mooier dan één cello? Inderdaad vier!

What could be better than óne cello? Indeed, four! You’ll find them in the Tansman Cello Quartet. In 2010 two Belgian, an Albanian and a Brazilian cellist met each other during the Festival Violoncello en Folie in Briancon, in the French Alps. Since then they perform in Belgium and France, and released their first CD ‘Légende‘ in 2015.

The cello is an instrument which can be played both very sweet or violent. That makes the instrument eccentric and rather particular. The four cellists of the Tansman Cello Quartet do have the quality to illustrate the beautiful different types of the cello. The ensemble sounds both as an intimate quartet but can also shine as a full string orchestra. The long melodic lines of ‘Deux pièces pour Quator the violoncelles on. 89‘ written by the late Romantic Belgian composer Joseph Jongen are in contrast with the ‘Allegro Molto’ from ‘Deux mouvements pour quatre violoncelles‘ by Alexandre Tansman which shows a totaly different quartet with compelling rhythms. The melody that resembles the ‘Cello Concerto No. 1‘ by Dmitri Shostakovich. Beautifully is the impressionistic ‘Suite pour quatre violoncelles’ by French composer Pierre Petit with risky and tricky harmonies. The Croatian composer and cellist Rudolph Matz explores with his ‘Quartet in D Minor’ several moods of the cello. For example the psalm-like ‘allegro‘ and the lively and folky ‘Final in moto Rustico‘. The name Tansman Cello Quartet refers to the Polish composer Alexandre Tansman (1897-1986) who lived and worked in France almost his whole life. He wrote several operas, seven symphonies, solo concertos and chamber music. The original for cello written compositions on this début CD ‘Légende‘ are diverse, where four cellos wonderful shine in musical glory. Well done!
