English version

The Beaufort Brussels Woodwind Quintet (members of the National Orchestra of Belgium) recorded with pianist Hans Ryckelynck the inspiring album ‘On the Wings of Winds‘ with compositions by the Liège composer Joseph Jongen (1873-1953) for woodwind quintet and piano.

Joseph Jongen was a talented composer and musician. Born in Liege, he was 8-year-old child when he started his study at the Conservatory of his hometown. He became an accomplished pianist and wrote his first compositions when he was thirteen years old. His oeuvre consists of brass and orchestral works, masses, chamber music and many organ compositions which he wrote in Sart-Lez-Spa. His ‘holiday resort‘ where he devoted his spare time to compose organ music and where he died in 1953. The record ‘On the Wings of Winds’ consists impressionism music with a high level melodic content. His compositions excel in orchestral approach; like the ‘Rhapsodie op. 70’, ‘Concerto op. 124’ and the beautiful ‘Méditation op. 21’ for English horn and piano. Like the French school, the Groupe des Six and especially Francis Poulenc who, like Joseph Jongen, fascinates in a musical and colourful metamorphosis. The music of Joseph Jongen is virtuoso; not only the skill to play your instrument is important, but also the sound of the ensemble is very important.  The Beaufort Brussels Woodwind Quintet and pianist Hans Ryckelynck are very well ensemble players who create and transform music into a colourful prism. The music sound so natural that you’d have almost forgotten what great musicians we have here. That makes this album a must. Incidentally, this edition is the 84th in a series of more than 90 CDs of music by Flemish composers from the 19th and 20th centuries! So, if you like it, try Phaedra.
