Jordi Savall.

Since 1997 AliaVox is the quality record label of the Catalan viola da gamba player Jordi Savall. He released many CDs with his ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert de Nations and Hesperion XXI. On his new label AliaVox Diversa Savall presents the Euskal Barrokensemble conducted by Enrike Solinis. An ensemble specialized in ancient (Basque) music.

The Euskal Barrokensemble founded in 2006 by Solinís combines ancient music with classical and popular music. Solinís is the leader of the ensemble and plays theorbo (a type of lute), vihuela, lute and guitar. He was also a memeber of Hesperion XXI and Le Concert des Nations, two ensembles conducted by Jordi Savall.

The album ‘Euskel Antiqva‘ by the Euskal Barrokensemble is full of music from the Basque County (Northern Spain). Based on historical research the ensemble playes ancient and almost forgotten compositions and arranged them to contemporary pieces. Creative, uninhibited and in different line-up these composition get a characteristic feeling. That makes the music very interesting and lovely to listen to. The CD opens with a religious work. A flute variation followed by (a capella) sung melody with percussion accompaniment. There are a few pieces played with small ensemble of violin, lute (or ûd – Arabic lute), percussion and vocals. But also compostions for a small choir like the beautiful liturgical song ‘Sibilaren Profeza’ for choir and solo voice. Particularly nice is the 15th-century love song ‘Con amores, la mi madre‘ played in the Basque zortzikio rhythm (five-beat) or ‘Ürrütiko Kantorea’ which refers to an old tune with a clear reference to the Gwerz, the Breton song. Noteworthy is also the ‘Acuero the Judimendi’ (late 15th century). A Jewish liturgical song asking to save the Jewish cemetery after the Jewish exile in Spain, 1492. Finally, ‘Koumas‘: a Persian instrumental melody (played by ûd and double-bass) with in the end a rhythmic Basque sword dance (in 3-beat). It’s all played so beautiful. The Euskal Barrokensemble shows us northern Spain with all its musical diversity – splendid!
