English version

Almost everybody knows one version of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with spoken narration to the music. Classical music where a story is told. Something similar happens on the new CD by the Canadian harpsichordist Catherine Perrin (Quebec). Music by J.P. Rameau and Denis Gougeon on stories of Jean de la Fontaine. Extremely beautiful!

To lard music from a master composer with contemporary music might be a bit tricky. On the album ‘La Cigale et les Violons’ (The Grasshopper and the Violins), we hear music from rococo composer J.P. Rameau (1683-1764) and Denis Gougeon (Quebec 1951). A very successful and thoroughly combination. Works by Rameau with its rich ornamentation and rapid arpeggios alongside contemporary pieces by Gougeon with moving, exciting chords and hidden chromaticism. The fables of Jean de la Fontaine told very concise in French (sometimes only the title) by Catherine Perrin who also plays the harpsichord virtuoso. The music is performed by Les Violons du Roy, an ensemble conducted by Mathieu Lussier. Also for those who don’t speak French, there remains a lot to enjoy. The performance is striking and daring: for example the end of ‘Le Chêne et la Roseau‘, where the string players seem to saw through their own instruments. The twinkling tremolo at ‘La Cigale…’ followed by a circus-like piece. The sharp timing in Rameau’s work, the incredibly beautiful phrasing and sentence structure are excellent played. As the striking ‘La Livre‘ with warm strings and virtuoso harpsichord ornaments, or the mutated variant in ‘L’indiscrête’. The CD closes with six short instrumental (harpsichord) works of Jean-Philippe Rameau. The album ‘La Cigale et les Violons’ is a colourful shading between rococo and the present: not only the choice of music particularly but especially the performance is surprisingly good!
