English version

The band BraAgas form the Czech Republic plays on their last album ‘Yallah!’ a wonderful collection of songs from Southern Europa: Serbia, Turkey. But especially the Sephardic songs form old Spain are remarkable. Four women and one man play on traditional instruments, sing in harmony vocals and translate the old tunes to the 21th century.

BraAgas was founded in 2007 in Prague The band released five albums and for their thirth album ‘Tapas’ they received the ‘Anděl Award’ in 2009; the Czech version of the Grammy. On their last album ‘Yallah!’ the group is more concentrated on the Sephardic repertoire. This music arose at the end of the 15th century (1492) after the Spanish Jews were forced to become a Christian or leave the country. Most of the Jews left the country and went to the North of Europe, Turkey, the Balkan and Greece. They took their music with them and developed these Sephardic songs. BraAgas translates these lovely traditional tunes to fresh and sweltering music. Especially the wonderful vocal harmonies (their trademark) are great and exciting and less found in the Sephardic repertoire. The rest of the songs on ‘Yallah!’ come from Serbia and Turkey and have the same expression like the Spanish songs. The group use acoustic instruments like violin, flutes, clarinet and several string instruments, supported by tight rhythmic percussion like cajon (percussion box) darbouka (drum) and riq (tambourine). ‘Yallah‘ is the Arabic word for ‘Come on, lets go’. Yes indeed, that’s what BraAgas is about ‘Go for it’ and do it enthusiastic!
