English version

Estrella Morente (1981) was born in Granada. She grew up in a flamenco family: father Enrique Morente flamenco singer (1942-2010) and mother Aurora Carbonell a dancer. Estrella Morente is, just like her father, prospeted to new influences and mix these with the flamenco tradition. You’ll find it on ‘Autorretrato’ (Self portrait).

The début-cd of Estrella MorenteMi cante y un poema’ (2001) was produced by her father and released by the Real World-label of Peter Gabriel, who was impressed by her voice. In 2006 the excellent album ‘Mujeres’ was released: dedicated to all women who inspired Estrella like Carmen Linares, Chavela Vargas(!) and Nina Simone. Above all, the song ‘Volver‘ (by Carlos Gardel) is on this album. A song which gave Estrella Morente international fame by the playback version of Penélope Cruz in the film ‘Volver’ (see you tube up).

Estrella Morente has a sensitive voice. Energetic, laconic, small, breakable and modest. This diversity makes her a star, gives her sympathy and show the warmth that is essential in flamenco music. On ‘Autorretrato’ she’s assisted by minimalist Michael Nyman, jazzgitarist Pat Metheny and the flamenco gitarists Paco de Lucía (1947-2014), Tomatito and Vicente Amigo. The album was recorded in a difficult situation. Her father Enrique Morente died. He was also the producer of ‘Autorretrato’. He composed a few songs and sang one with his daughter. The music is varied. We hear flamenco styles like sevillanas en bulerías, Cuban rhythms and classical influences in ‘Pregon de las Moras’. A wide scala of music in which Estrella shines in a contemporary self portrait, wonderful!
