English version below

English version

Erik Marchand is one of the finest Breton singers. He recorded cd’s with traditional music, but he’s also involved in special combinations. On his last cd ‘Ukronia‘ he recorded a mix of Breton/Renaissance music. A beautiful crossover.

Erik Marchand (1955) was born in Paris with a Breton background. He studied Breton music and language and became the most important (folk)singer from Western France. From the early ’80’s he began recording music and worked together with Thierry Robin. A guitarist and ûd player (Arabic lute) who adds Indian and Arabic flavour to his music. Marchand also recroded with the Romanian groups Taraf de Caransebes and Balkaniks on where he made a connection between Brittany and Banat: a region on the border of Romania and Serbia. On his last cd ‘Ukronia‘ he mixes adventurously traditional Breton and Renaissance music. On this manner you’ll recognize how familiar these styles are. For example the ‘tripla‘: the repeat of the melody at the end of a piece in a 3-beat (like we hear in: ‘C’est la fille d’une riche…’ en ‘La Belle qui cherche…’). A composition technic often used in the Renaissance. Erik Marchand has a striking and straight voice with the typical Breton color. Very recognizable and decisive way of singing that makes ‘Ukronia’ unequivocally Breton. But his instrumentalists on cornet, viola da Gamba (cello), flute, percussion and oud (lute) add a wonderful fresh Renaissance sound. In this way we hear a splendid crossover and Marchand succeeded again in conjure with the Breton heritage!
