English version

The saxophone player Pedro Iturralde (1929 Falces/Northern Spain) recorded at the end of the sixties ‘Jazz Flamenco’ en ‘Jazz Flamenco 2’, who are released on óne cd ‘Jazz Flamenco’. Pedro Iturralde is as jazz-flamenco pioneer, looking for the perfect mix of Southern Spanish music with American jazz.

Mid fifties the first flamenco-jazz-combination appears on the record ‘Jazz Flamenco’. A gently attempt from Lionel Hampton and the Spanish pianist Tete Monteliu to a jazz flamenco cross-over. In 1960 Miles Davis recorded ‘Sketches of Spain’ with arranger Gil Evans and two years later John Coltrane appeared with the album ‘Olé‘ who also mixed flamenco with American jazz.

But it got really exciting when saxophone player Pedro Iturralde recorded his album ‘Jazz Flamenco’ in 1967. Together with the German pianist Paul Grassl he explored the traditional flamenco jazz combination. It was the the German jazz critic Joachim Ernst Berendt (1922-2000) who came up with the idea of working together with the young flamenco guitarist Paco de Algeciras, who became later the well-known Paco de Lucia (1947). With him Pedro Iturralde recorded two ‘Jazz Flamenco’ albums, together with the pianist Grassl and the German musicians Eric Peter on bass and drummer Peter Wyboris. The result is solid jazz-flamenco with piano playing close to jazz and guitar playing close to flamenco. The saxophone works like a catalysis who bind these two styles together and floats between flamenco and (modal)jazz. Iturralde is an expert, playing tight and agile, easily followed by his band. The guitar on the first ‘Jazz Flamenco’ is mainly in the intro’s and interludes: with a wonderful duo sax/guitar in ‘Soleares’. On Jazz Flamenco 2′ the guitar is more involved and put into the arrangement. And there’s a trombone added, played by the Italian Diano Piana. ‘Jazz Flamenco’ brings music for jazz and flamenco lovers from an exciting era. Who also missed the Blue Note release, gets a wonderful second chance!
