English version below

Bezetting: Philipp Rüttgers – piano & compositie / Bert Lochs: trompet / Miguel Boelens: alt & Sopraansax / Nils van Haften: tenorsax & basklarinet / Vincent Veneman: trombone/ Tobias Nijboer: contrabas /Felix Schlarmann: drums.

English version

The pianist Philipp Rüttgers lives at Arnhem, a city in the East of the Netherlands. He’s an adventurer, proved by his album ‘Live at Lux’: recorded live at the Lux Theatre Nijmegen – March 2014. A new line-up and immediately recording a live album? That’s brave! Rüttgers is not only a wonderful pianist but also a fine composer.

Phil’s Music Laboratory is a place where new music will be developed: risky, idiosyncratic and undertaking influenced by all kind of styles: pop, rock, funk, jazz and improvised music. Recognizable but still original. Energetic music, even in some slow pieces (like Sad Gaucho) you feel the burning sun on your back. The irregular beats at the start of the album (wonderful left piano hand) are blown away by four brass men. Even the rest of the album makes you feel you’re in a fast train traveling through a divers musical landscape. This septet sounds like an unity. Compact brass with tight piano and rhythm section. Fresh arranged and dynamic solo’s. Beautiful are the double sided theme’s and rhythm’s like Soul Dance and Sad Gaucho. Or the opening piece History Remember with an eye wink to Avishai Cohen, bass player from New York. Pianist Philipp Rüttgers founds a new way, like he says himself: ‘my music got more structure and depth now’. And that’s for sure!
