English version

Although it’s winter in Europe, the music by the Mehmet Polat Trio gives you a warm feeling. On ‘Next Spring’ there’s a combination of ûd (Arabic lute), twinkling kora (African harp) and ney (flute) looking forward to the next hot summer.

Mehmet Polat is an Arabic lute player. Studied Ottoman music at Istanbul and emigrated to the Netherlands (Amsterdam) in 2007. He recorded a solo album and a few recordings with the Arifa quartet. ‘Next Spring‘ is the début of this wonderful ûd-kora-ney trio, played by Mehmet Polat, Zoumana Diarra and Sinan Arat. Every instrument with it’s own characteristic sound, in an unusual but lovely experiment. In an Arabic background, theme’s are played in unison before the improvisations starts, with a lot of repeating (and exciting) rhythms. Polat, who added two bass strings at his ûd to give the instrument a broader sound, plays striking. He composed all the pieces and gives his fellow musicians all the space to shine. A lot of the compositions start with a taksim, a solo intro to make the listener get familiar with the sound and the key they play in. The instrumentation is mostly two-at-one: while one gives a solo/melody the other two accompany and vice versa. ‘Next Spring‘ is a contemplative album with a warm glow on top. Sometimes sweltering and a little breeze but always with the right dosage in fine dynamics.
