Mama Sissoko was jarenlang zanger en gitarist van de legendarische band Super Biton de Ségou. Een grote band (19 leden) die vooral in Mali bekendheid kreeg in de jaren ’70 en ’80. In de heroprichting in 2001 werd Mama Sissoko de bandleider en sindsdien verzorgt de band de slotact op het Festival sur le Niger.
Zijn rijke muzikale ervaring spat van zijn nieuwe CD af. In een levendige live-set horen we Mama Sissoko waarin hij wordt bijgestaan door 2 begeleidingsgitaristen, een bassist, percussionist, n’goni (snaarinstrument) speler en een achtergrondzanger. Naast nieuw werk staan er ook stukken op LIVE van zijn tweede solo-album Soleil de Minuit uit 1999. Zoals Safiatou, een liefdeslied met voortreffelijk solowerk van Sissoko waarin hij, vooral dynamisch, mooi wordt gevolgd door zijn begeleiders. Iri is een klassieker van de band Super Biton de Ségou die op LIVE net zo opzwepend klinkt, al is deze uitvoering zonder blazers. Fraai is ook Soleil de Minuit. Een salsa Africana met een opzwepende son montuno riff en een enerverende percussie-solo.
Mama Sissoko heeft een krachtige en overtuigende stem. Daarnaast is hij een gitarist die zijn gitaarspel volledig benut. Zijn gitaarsound heeft een frisse en hoge klankkleur. Hij heeft een zeer ritmische aanpak, voegt galm toe, speelt gemuteerd (afgedempt met zijn hand op de snaren) en gebruikt veel repeterende loopjes, al dan niet aangevuld met tremolo tonen, waarbij hij strak wordt begeleid door zijn steady spelende mede-musici. Dat maakt zijn muziek krachtig en overtuigend en zijn nieuwe album LIVE energiek en tijdloos!

On LIVE we hear the Malian guitarist and singer Mama Sissoko during a concert in La Villette, Paris 1998.
Mama Sissoko was the singer and guitarist of the legendary band Super Biton de Ségou for many years. A large band (19 members) that became famous mainly in Mali in the 1970s and 1980s. When it was re-formed in 2001, Mama Sissoko became the band leader and since then the band has provided the closing act at the Festival sur le Niger.
His rich musical experience shines through on his new CD. In a lively live set we hear Mama Sissoko in which he is assisted by 2 accompaniment guitarists, a bassist, percussionist, n’goni (string instrument) player and a backing singer. In addition to new work, there are also pieces on LIVE from his second solo album Soleil de Minuit from 1999. Such as Safiatou, a love song with excellent solo work by Sissoko in which he is beautifully followed by his accompanists, especially dynamically. Iri is a classic by the band Super Biton de Ségou that sounds just as exciting on LIVE, although this performance is without horns. Soleil de Minuit is also beautiful. Mama Sissoko has a powerful and convincing voice. He is also a guitarist who makes full use of his guitar playing. His guitar sound is fresh with a high timbre. He has a very rhythmic approach, adds reverb, plays mutated (muted with his hand on the strings) and uses many repetitive tunes, with or without tremolo tones, where he is closely accompanied by his steady playing fellow musicians. This makes his music so powerful and convincing and his new album LIVE energetic and timeless!
