In Between Thoughts…A New World is alweer het zesde album van het Mexicaanse gitaarduo Rodrigo Sanchez en Gabriela Quintero. Hun vorige album Mettavolution won in 2020 een Grammy Award voor Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Zo’n tien jaar geleden begon het muzikale balletje te rollen toen het duo samenwerkte met Hans Zimmer aan de soundtrack van de film Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Ook nu is de muziek instrumentaal en danst deze over de grenzen van world, klassieke muziek, folk, rock en flamenco. De kern van de muziek zijn elektrische en akoestische gitaren, met aanvulling van diverse effecten waaronder galm, tremolo, wah-wah en fuzzy/distortion, ondersteund door het soms wat overdadige orkestwerk van het Bulgaars Symfonie Orkest. Deze symfonische (violen-)toevoeging maakt de muziek weliswaar luisterrijk, maar ook onnodig hoogdravend en gezwollen. Iets wat deze twee gitaristen met gemak kunnen ontberen, aangezien zij heel goed in staat zijn om met hun doortastende composities, gitaarwerk, effecten en strakke percussie een sound te creëren die ongeëvenaard interessant, knap en virtuoos is.
De stukken zijn spannend en hebben een fraaie opbouw, waarbij ingenieus gebruik wordt gemaakt van tempo- en volumewisselingen, met zo nu en dan stevige solo’s zoals in het slot van Broken Rage. Het prachtig, bijna zwevend & stuwende ritme in Descending to nowhere, de flamenco-touch in Seeking Unreality en de vaart in het titelstuk In Between Thoughts…A New World maakt de CD tot een van de beste gitaaralbums van 2023!

The guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela presents an exciting acoustic/electric guitar mix on their new album In Between Thoughts…A New World.
In Between Thoughts…A New World is the sixth album by the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero. Their previous album Mettavolution won a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. About ten years ago the musical succes started when the duo collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack of the film Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Their music dances on the edge of world, classical music, folk, rock and flamenco. The core of the music is electric and acoustic guitars, supplemented with various effects including reverb, tremolo, wah-wah and fuzzy/distortion, supported by the sometimes excessive orchestral work of the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. This symphonic (violin) addition makes the music glorious, but also unnecessarily pompous and turgid. Something that these two wonderful guitarists can easily do without, as they are very capable of creating a sound that is unparalleled interesting and virtuoso with their incisive compositions, guitar work, effects and tight percussion.
The pieces are exciting and have a beautiful structure, with the ingenious use of tempo and volume changes, with occasional strong solos such as in the end of Broken Rage. The almost floating & driving rhythm in Descending to nowhere, the flamenco touch in Seeking Unreality and the lovely speed in the title piece In Between Thoughts…A New World makes this CD one of the finest guitar music albums of this year!
