Neoteric Ensemble

Het Neoteric Ensemble speelt nieuw, grenzenloos gecomponeerd werk voor zes blazers.

Trompettist Toby Street en tubaspeler Adrian Miotti zijn de oprichters van het Neoteric Ensemble. Op hun debuut-album Volume 1 worden ze bijgestaan door Sarah Field op saxofoon en trompet, trombonist Richard Watkin, trompettist James Fountain en saxofonist Rob Buckland. Zes blazers dus die, zonder bas & drums, een geweldig ritmische set neerzetten. Alle muzikanten zijn klassiek geschoold en hebben behoorlijke ervaring binnen de Britse muziekscene. Zo gaven ze uitvoeringen met het Londen Symphonic Orchestra, het BBC Philharmonic Orchestra en The Michael Nyman Band.

De muziek op Volume 1 balanceert op het snijvalk van hedendaags klassiek en jazz. Nieuw gecomponeerd werk dat speciaal voor het Neoteric Ensemble werd geschreven.

Het album opent met 3 Soundscapes: Mojito, Fjord en Bosh (uit een set van 10) van Rob Buckland, die hij oorspronkelijk componeerde voor twee saxofoons. Fraai melodieuze stukken waar knap gebruik is gemaakt van diverse bezettingen, klankkleur en dynamiek. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan in The Effra Parade van Misha Mulo-Abbado. Een stuk dat gespeeld wordt in jazz swing-timing, met prachtige complementaire ritmiek in een enerverende small-big-band orkestratie.

De Pandemic Suite werd geschreven in de Corona-eindsprint begin 2021 door Andy Panayi. Het openingswerk Huanan Market is het klinkend, dissonante verhaal van de markt waar Corona begon, vol dissonante harmonieën en levendige ritmiek. De volgende delen verbeelden het tragische verloop van het Corona-virus dat ronddwaalt en veel slachtoffers maakt. Het werk Neo van Charlotte Harding heeft een originele opbouw. In dit werk wordt de melodie verdeeld over diverse instrumenten die elkaar, als een puzzel, aanvullen. Een boeiend werk dat werkelijk voortreffelijk wordt uitgevoerd door het Neoteric Ensemble. Het werk Karatina Market is een harmonische compositie van Toby Street, waarin hij gebruik maakt van Zuid-Afrikaanse harmonieën, die zichzelf herhalen en daarmee een enorme puls genereren. Zulke fraaie harmonieën vinden we ook terug in Bach in Barbados van Dan Jenkins. Rustgevende koraal-akkoorden monden uit in een ritmisch labyrint. Een ingenieus vlechtwerk van melodieën die elkaar aanvullen en ondersteunen.

Het slotwerk Arriba van Mark Nightingale is een zeer ritmische compositie met een pulserende tuba en zeer snel schetterende trompetten in tertsen, als in een Mexicaanse mariachi dat zorgt voor een feestelijke afsluiting van de CD.

Volume 1 klinkt als een klokje. Het gemak waarmee deze musici de stukken spelen, is een lust voor het oor. Verbluffende trefzekerheid wordt gelardeerd met strakke timing, spatzuiver spel en virtuositeit. En dit is dan nog maar Volume 1 van het Neoteric Ensemble. Ik kijk nu al uit naar Volume 2.

The Neoteric Ensemble plays new, limitless composed work for six wind instruments.

Trumpeter Toby Street and tuba player Adrian Miotti are the founders of the Neoteric Ensemble. On their debut album Volume 1 they are assisted by Sarah Field on saxophone and trumpet, trombonist Richard Watkin, trumpeter James Fountain and saxophonist Rob Buckland. So six wind players who, without bass & drums, create a great rhythmic set. All musicians are classically trained and have considerable experience within the British music scene. They performed with the London Symphonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and The Michael Nyman Band.

The music on Volume 1 balances on the cutting edge of contemporary classical music and jazz. Newly composed work written especially for the Neoteric Ensemble.

The album opens with 3 Soundscapes: Mojito, Fjord and Bosh (from a set of 10) by Rob Buckland, which he originally composed for two saxophones. Beautifully melodic pieces where clever use has been made of various settings, timbre and dynamics. We find something similar in The Effra Parade by Misha Mulo-Abbado. A piece played in jazz swing timing, with beautiful complementary rhythms in an exciting small-big-band orchestration.

The Pandemic Suite was written in the Corona final sprint by Andy Panayi in early 2021. The opening work Huanan Market is the resounding, dissonant story of the market where Corona began, full of dissonant harmonies and lively rhythms. The following parts depict the tragic course of the Corona virus that is wandering around and causing many victims. Charlotte Harding’s work Neo has an original structure. In this composition the melody is divided over various instruments that complement each other, like a puzzle. A fascinating work, excellently performed by the Neoteric Ensemble. Karatina Market is a harmonic composition by Toby Street, in which he uses South African harmonies. Repetitive chords that generates an enormous pulse. We also find such beautiful harmonies in Bach in Barbados by Dan Jenkins. Soothing choral chords culminate in a rhythmic labyrinth. An ingenious wickerwork of melodies that complement and support each other.

The final work Arriba by Mark Nightingale is a very rhythmic composition with a pulsating tuba and very quickly sparkling trumpets in thirds, like in a Mexican mariachi, which provides a festive end to the CD.

Volume 1 sounds wonderfully. The ease with which these musicians play the pieces is a feast for the ears. Astonishing accuracy is interspersed with tight timing, crystal-clear playing and virtuosity. And this is just Volume 1 of the Neoteric Ensemble. I’m already looking forward to Volume 2.
