English version below

English version

Musician Felipe Salles creates a fine bridge between the music of America and the music of his native Brazil on his new record Home is Here.

Born in Sao Paulo (Brazil), composer, conductor and saxophonist Felipe Salles has lived and worked in the U.S. since 1995. We encountered him with saxophonists Randy Brecker, Paquito D’Rivera, David Liebman, guitarist Lionel Loueke and drummer Bob Moses, among others. In addition, his arrangements and compositions have been performed by, among others, the Metropole Orkest, the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Violas and the Meta4 String Quartet.

In 2016, Felipe Salles started his own band the Interconnections Ensemble. A tight big band for which he wrote and arranged works. The ensemble also serves as a retrospective of his immigration background. His debut album The Lullaby Project, for example, was a look back at the lullaby repertoire from his native Brazil and The New Immigrant Experience (from 2020) offers a glimpse into America’s immigration politics.

On his new album Home is Here we hear a 19-piece big band with a horn section of saxophone, trumpet and trombone, supplemented with guitar, piano and rhythm section of bass & drums. Furthermore, the CD is entirely devoted to international and in the US. resident musicians, including saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera (Cuba), singer Sofia Rei (Argentina), saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart (Guadeloupe), flugelhorn player Nadje Noordhuis (Australia), singer Magos Herrera (Mexico), saxophonist/percussionist Yosvany Terry (Cuba), guitarist Chico Pinheiro (Brazil) and saxophonist Melissa Aldana (Chile). Like a Duke Ellington, Salles composed works that perfectly match the emigration and musical experience of these musicians. They all got a feature in one of the eight new compositions, accompanied by a rock solid big band of almost twenty musicians. Pieces in which a crossover of music from Brazil and America is clearly audible.

The works on Home is Here are original, bright and have an adventurous character involving various music styles, such as Brazilian bossa nova, samba, forro and chorro as well as American bebop, funk, pop and even classical music. All these styles are beautifully incorporated into the compositions, sometimes as short fragments that change the craft and vary the timbre beautifully. The timing and articulation of the Interconnections Ensemble are phenomenal. The band sounds homogeneous, razor-sharp and the compositions are very varied due to the changing line-ups.

With Home is Here, Felipe Salles provides a magnificent portrait of his migration background, which he has translated musically with integrity. A method to be jealous of.
