English version below

English version

La Tarantella – E un Po’ Di Follie is the beautiful new edition of old recordings by Christina Pluhar’s ensemble L’Arpeggiata.

The Austrian musician, harpist and theorbo player Christina Pluhar studied at the University of Graz, the town where she was born. She further developed her fascination for early music (from around 1500) by studying at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (in Basel) and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where she has also been teaching since 1999. In 2000 she founded her ensemble L’Arpeggiata with which she created a new life into old music with new arrangements and line-up’s.

The 6-piece CD box set La Tarantella – E un Po’ Di Follie (It’s a little madness) is a reissue of her first six albums. On CD 1 we find music by the German/Italian composer Giovanni Girolamo. On this album, La Villanelle, we hear the predecessor of the Neapolitan song, sung passionately by Johanette Zomer and Pino de Vittorio. An Italian singer (and guitarist) who already released the legendary album Tarantella Del Gargano in 1997. Album 2 contains works by Stefano Landi (Homo fugit velut ombra) and albums 3 and 4 contain work by Emilio de’Cavalieri, performed by about 15 soloists, choir and ensemble in addition to singer Johanette Zomer and vocal all-rounder Marco Beasley in an inspired performance of Rappresentatione di anima e di corpo (Representation of Mind and Body). A music theater work on the edge between oratorio and opera, with recitatives, solo pieces and choral works. The 5th album La Tarantella – Antidotum Tarantulae is reserved for the southern Italian dance of the same name, which is characterized by its fast 6/8th measure. This dance originated in the middle of the 17th century in Puglia (southern Italy). Arose after a spider bite from the poisonous tarantella spider. By dancing rousingly and swallowing the so-called Antidotum Tarantulae, the poison disappeared from your body and the tarantella legend was born that grew into a tradition that is still celebrated annually in Melpignano during a large Tarantella Festival. On the last, 6th, CD La Tarantella, the dance is performed in an improvising setting with, among others, the fantastic singer Lucilla Galeazzi and the legendary clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi.

Christina Pluhar is the initiator on all CDs, plays the harp, theorbo, created the line-up for the ensembles and conducts. This inspiring performances has produced timeless music with lively interpretations, from which many musicians drew their inspiration and many listeners listened to with respect. It’s fantastic that this old music are widely available again. For those who missed it, a second chance!
