English version

Majster a Margaréta is the ninth CD by the Slovak musician and composer Sisa Michalidesová. A rock-solid mix of jazz, classical, improvisation and pop music for the adventurous listener.

The music, the compositions on Majster a Margaréta are not only whimsical, pompous, organic, imaginative, cinematic and full of drama, but above all idiosyncratic and daring. Sisa Michalidesová is an excellent composer, singer and flute player from Slovakia. She grew up in a musical family. Mother organist and actress and father playwright and teacher, both graduated musicians from the Bratislava Conservatory. Sisa studied flute and attended improvisation workshops in Všenory near Prague. At the age of thirteen she discovered that there is more music than only the notated one. She got jazz harmony lessons and embarks on a musical adventure. Through her parents she ends up at the Smile Theater that was founded by her parents. A place where she could extensively try out her pieces that she composes for both adults and children.

The music on this new album is inspired by the book The Master and Margaret by the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. A book about the purges and corruption during the Stalin era in Russia. The result is well-thought-out music that grabs you and takes you along in a whirlwind of fascinating compositions, full of instrumentation, atmospheres and colour changes. From icy calm and quiet passages to compellingly bombastic parts, with beautiful unexpected (orchestral) turns. Except for the song Frida (sung by Sisa), which has a piano accompaniment and larded with percussion effects and a trumpet and flute solo. Sisa Michalidesová is assisted on this album by about 15 musicians. Her musical ideas are limitless and lean against jazz, classical and improvised music with tightly arranged passages. The music is full of surprising (synthesizer) effects and organized spontaneity such as phonetic vocals, tremolo sounds, percussion riffs, twinkling Fender Rhodes and fuzzing guitar and violin solos. The closing piece Odpustenie a večný pokoj (Forgiveness and Eternal Peace) is the second vocal piece. Sung by Peter Adamov and opera singer Linda Ballova, in which they are accompanied by subtle piano playing, percussion and the Mucha String Quartet. The album Majster a Margaréta is a great record, a music-on-adventure CD, a dazzling album that stimulates the senses, performed by outstanding musicians led by Sisa Michalidesová.
