Geweldig!

English version

Singer Nilza Costa made a wonderful crossover CD with three Italian musicians, which resulted in Le Notti di San Patrizio.

Le Notti di San Patrizio is a beautiful crossover album by Brazilian singer Nilza Costa. A daring mix of West European jazz and Brazilian styles such as candomblé, capoeira, samba and maculelê. Since 2006 Costa lives in Italy and worked with drummer and pianist Roberto Rossi, (reed) player Massimo Zaniboni and (bass) guitarist Daniele Santimone, with whom she also recorded this third album. Nilza Costa is an authentic singer who shows her culture in a fresh and unadulterated way. She sings in Yoruba, the language that was brought from Nigeria to Brazil in the slavery era (16th century) and is still spoken there. Her music (which she mostly composed herself) is steeped in spirituality. Pieces that were written during the sleepless nights, hence the title Le Notti di San Patrizio. Magical pieces in which her music is warmly framed by the arrangements of these three musicians with an unlimited orientation. Exciting, for example, is Awa, which means Us. A tantalizing piece where an intro of percussion and flute moves the music slowly towards the candomble, over which Nilza Costa sings an enchanting melody. The song is an indictment of selfishness, racism, social inequality and corruption. Or the final piece Choro das Aguas. Fragile vocals with a warm touch of guitar playing, Fhender Rhodes piano and bass guitar playing. Le Notti di San Patrizio is adventurously produced by Roberto Rossi who takes Nilza Costa’s music to a new musical level with great attention and respect. Just listen to Oselu Ko Ni Sè (Politics Doesn’t Work) in which Nilza exposes politics followed by energetic jazz/funk, superbly performed by this profound trio. Le Notte di San Patrizio is not only a varied and captivating but also a daring and risky album. A CD that you should listen to with unbiased ears and then immerse yourself in old traditions with a modern metier. Superb!
