English version below

English version

AADO is the title of the special solo CD by the Senegalese kora player (West African harp) Kadialy Kouyate.

Kadialy Kouyate is a singer-songwriter from southern Senegal. He currently lives in London where he teaches at the Soas University (School of Oriental and African Studies). He grew up in the Mandinka culture that occurs in The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Mali. A culture which is full of stories, often sung with, among other things, kora accompaniment. Special is now the album AADO, on which Kadialy Kouyate does not sing, but plays instrumental pieces. His own compositions are inspired by the Mandinka culture. A culture where moral habits and values are very important. Such as greetings & giving best wishes, hospitality, selflessness and respect for the culture. All these themes are reflected in his music. That is, Kouyate was inspired by these (universal) themes and composed nine pieces, nine songs without lyrics. As a listener, these life-themes are not so recognizable in the music, but that doesn’t matter, the music is great! The pieces have an organic joie de vivre that expresses enormous positivity. For example, Buna is a piece about hospitality. The opening bars have a moving rhythm that is also nicely divided over two hands, so that you are welcomed to enter the warm sounds of the kora. The piece Thiosano has a melodic theme that honors the musical heritage. Many compositions start with an introduction, an intro that introduces you to the key, the timbre and the color of the scale. A way that we also find in classical Oriental music, where it is called taksim. With the album AADO Kadialy Kouyate pays a tribute to his culture. He is a passionate and skilled musician who not only plays the themes beautifully, but also nicely decorates them with fast ornaments and then improvises very skillfully!
