English version below

The BGKO consists of eight musicians from Spain, Italy, Serbia, France and Greece, among others. The group was formed in early 2012 after a Roma day in Barcelona, where several musicians met each other, played together and decided that this elusive musical cohesion should not be lost. That resulted was recorded on five CDs added with the beautiful Nova Era (A new Era). Singer Margherita Abita is an absolute ear-catcher. Her voice is so elusive, so sensitive. Smooth vocals that effortlessly switch between the timbre of the Sicilian song (where she comes from) to the sevdah of Amira Medunjanin or the Macedonian guttural sound of Esma Redzepova, for example. Her voice is remarkable in Dere Geliyor Dere and stunning in Marijo, deli Bela Kumrijo. On this new CD Nova Era we hear traditional vocal and instrumental pieces from Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Hungary and Turkey. The BGKO plays virtuoso and very organic. Clear arrangements where different musicians have their solo moment, such as in the intro to Jana I Alexandris where guitarist Julien Chanal beautifully plays the theme. But also the accordion playing of the Italian Mattia Schirosa (beautiful in Dajchovo Horo), the clarinet of Dani Carbonell and violinist Oleksandr Sora (lovely solo in Sedi Dona) from the Ukraine is striking. It is wonderful how these musicians, together with percussionist Stelios Togias (catchy darbuka playing in Sedi Donka – Joc Mare) and double bassist Ivan Kovavic, create an excellent Eastern European sound. Although the music of the Barcelona Gipsy BalKan Orchestra follows the tradition and is sometimes slightly predictable, the band stands out for its passion. In this way their music becomes so excitingly. And that’s exactly what music is all about and makes BGKO’s Nova Era a splendid record!
