English version

The Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble plays a beautiful version of Le Carnaval des Animaux by Camille Saint-Saens in an arrangement by composer and arranger Piet Swerts who also set music to 15 poems from Le Bestiaire by Guillaume Apollinaire.

Outside musical subjects have always been a source of inspiration within music. However, in the Romantic era, at the beginning of the 19th century, this movement took off and numerous composers used outside musical subjects as inspiration for their works. Good examples are Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, The Moldau by Bedrich Smetana or L’apprenti sorcier by Paul Dukas. But Le Carnaval des Animaux also belongs to this Romantic style. An intimate work that the French Camille Saint-Saens composed in 1886, in which he shows a musical exposé of a number of animals such as the lion, elephant, kangaroo, chickens and fishes in an aquarium. The Flemish composer Piet Swerts was commissioned by clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx to arrange this composition for a small ensemble, with an astonishing result. Although the musical material has remained about the same and Swerts stays close to the original, the arrangement become a different kind of composition. The grandeur of the Symphony Orchestra has been exchanged for string quartet, piano and clarinet. This makes the work sound lighter, more transparent, lively and graceful, with a leading role for piano and clarinet. The work is superbly performed by the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble of clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx. A broadly oriented musician who is always looking for new musical paths in addition to the usual repertoire. This wonderful arrangement fits in seamlessly with that.

In the second part of the album Le Bestiaire, Piet Swerts composed the music for poetry from the eponymous collection of poems by Guillaume Apollinaire from 1911. For about 15 poems he composed music in the Late Romantic style that fits seamlessly with the work of Saint-Saens. Sparkling chamber music in which, just like in the composition of Saint-Saëns, animals are played musically. The unwieldy of the elephant in which we hear Hendrikx on the bass clarinet, the galloping of the horse in Le Cheval, the mysterious in Le Serpent, the mischief of Le Lapin and some musical spirits of Peter and the Wolf (S. Prokofiev) in Le Chat. For those listeners who are searching for the edges of classical music, Le Bestiaire by the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble is highly recommended. Fantastic music, beautifully packaged (in a wonderful 47-page booklet contains beautiful b / w illustrations by Emilie Lauwers), unparalleled music, performed with verve that brings the musical animal world on the spot. What else do you want!
