This year, 2019, the Kölner Streichsextett excists for 20 years. In addition, to performing works by well-known composers such as Tchaikovsky and Dvorak, the ensemble has always been looking for pieces by unknown composers such as Busch, Hopstein and Widmann. Music has also been arranged for string sextet, including the 6th symphony by Ludwig von Beethoven. For their latest album Great Britian – Great Music, the Kölner Streichsextett searched for works composed by British composers for string sextet. That turned out to be quite a task since there was little chamber music written by British composers and certainly not for string sextet. Yet the ensemble has found three works that are unparalleled performed on their new CD Great Britian – Great Music. The album opens with the String Sextet in E flat Major (H. 107) by Frank Bridge, composed between 1906-1912. A work that is related to late Romanticism with a sophisticated use of chromatic, modulations and a beautiful change between themes in the upper and lower voice, with a touch of impressionism in the 3rd part, added with a swirling end. The second work on this beautiful album is the Scherzo for String Sextet (H 23) from 1897 written by Gustav Holst. A composer we know of course from The Planets: the programmatic suite which he composed 17 years later. His Scherzo has a beautiful melody that has a propelling effect due to its 3-count beats. By the way, Beethoven replaced the third part of his symphonies, the menuet, into a scherzo, which is much quicker and more lively and contains more musical humor. For example, Holst now and then halves the 3-count tempo: it seems as if there is kind of ‘hold’ on the music. A surprising effect. The final work is the String Sextet in D Major Op 43 by Joseph Holbrook composed in 1902. Particularly striking due to it’s chromatic. Especially in the second part Unhappy Childhood, causes it a slight melancholy. The Final, the third part though, is alive and kicking with a thunderous ending. The Kölner Streichsextett plays accurately, with a broad musical colour and a warm tone. The ensemble sounds like a unity, like a full string orchestra. Six string instruments played by six musicians who are fully attuned to each other and make a rich timbre in music which has  never been released on CD before. Really great!
