De talentvolle Franse saxofonist Emile Parisien nam in 2017 een voortreffelijk concert op met zijn kwintet aangevuld met enkele gastmusici. Deze live registratie is nu te beluisteren op zijn nieuwe album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ waarin we hem horen met o.a.de Duitse pianist Joachim Kühn, trompettist Wynton Marsalis en de virtuoze accordeonist Vincent Peirani.

De in 1982 in Cahors (zuid Frankrijk) geboren Emile Parisien is een muzikant en componist die de randen opzoekt van de jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek. Hij mengt deze moeiteloos met folk, pop en rockmuziek. Hij deelde het podium met o.a. bassist Chris Mc Bride, saxofonist Johnny Griffin, vibrafonist Bobby Hutcherson en trompettist Wynton Marsalis die ook te horen is op het circusachtig en virtuoos gespeelde ‘Transmitting’ op dit album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ dat naast de CD ook een DVD bevat. Op piano horen we Joachim Kühn (fraaie solo in ‘Balladibiza II’ en ‘Missing a Page’), op bas Simon Tailleu, op drums Mario Costa en op gitaar Manu Codjia die opvalt door zijn fantastische ruige en trefzekere solo’s met een voortreffelijk gitaargeluid. Leider en saxofonist Emile Parisien geeft zijn musici veel ruimte om te schitteren. Hij schreef de meeste stukken of was mede-componist van o.a. het openingswerk ‘Le clown tueur de le fête foraine’. Een werk met een vette knipoog naar de Franse musette (met zijn heerlijke chromatiek), voortreffelijk gespeeld door accordeonist Vincent Peirani. Het album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ staat vol muziek voor de open-minded luisteraar die houdt van verrassende composities, fraaie solo’s en virtuositeit zoals we dat wel meer tegenkomen bij Franse musici als Laurent Cugny, Vincent Courtois en natuurlijk Louis Sclavis.

The talented French saxophonist Emile Parisien recorded an excellent concert in 2017 with his quintet and some guest musicians. This live recording can now be heard on his new album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ in which we hear him with German pianist Joachim Kühn, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the virtuoso accordionist Vincent Peirani.
Born in 1982 in Cahors (southern France), Emile Parisien is a musician and composer who seeks out for the edges of jazz and improvised music. He mixes these effortlessly with folk, pop and rock music. Parisien shared the stage with bassist Chris Mc Bride, saxophonist Johnny Griffin, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis who can also be heard on the circus like and virtuoso played ‘Transmitting’ on this album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ in which beside a CD also a DVD is included. On the piano we hear Joachim Kühn (beautiful solo in ‘Balladibiza II’ and ‘Missing a Page’), bass player Simon Tailleu, on drums Mario Costa and on guitar Manu Codjia who stands out for his fantastic, rugged and confident solos with a lovely guitar sound. Leader and saxophonist Emile Parisien gives his musicians plenty of room to play. He wrote most of the pieces or was co-composer of, among other things, the opening work ‘Le clown tueur de le fête foraine’. A fine composition with a touch of the French musette (with its delicious chromaticism), played excellently by accordionist Vincent Peirani. The album ‘Sfumato live in Marciac’ is full of music for the open-minded listener who loves surprising compositions, beautiful solos and virtuosity as we encounter more often with French musicians like Laurent Cugny, Vincent Courtois and of course Louis Sclavis.
