In the 60s a lot of people immigrated from the mountains to the coastal cities in Peru looking for a better life. Young musicians those days were inspired by pop and rock music and used instruments such as electric guitar and organ to transform the Colombian cumbia to an electric version: supplemented with other musical styles such as reggae, ska and merengue. A new style of music was born: the chicha and the result is amazing. This warm Pacific breeze-driven music was mixed with a locally brewed drink, the chicha. Indeed, a drink with the same name as the music which gives the music a psychedelic edge. The group Bareto is one of the main bands nowadays in the scene. They play many cumbias with (surf-) guitars (with wah-wah and tremolo), organ, bass and percussion. Besides some instrumental pieces, Mauricio Mesones sings with a friendly voice and is regularly assisted by the (background) vocals Rolo Gallardo and Joaquín Mariátegui who are both responsible for the original compositions. Music that sounds so familiar that it seems like you’ve heard the songs before. Great ones are ‘El impredecile‘, ‘La negra y el fantasma‘ where the accordion reminds to the Colombian vallenato and ‘Viejita guarachera’ with lovely sound effects with a brilliant end. A dreamy moment is the song ‘El Loco‘ sung by the 71-year-old Peruvian superstar Susana Baca. ‘Impredecible‘ is an adventurous album with nicely arranged music. And if you look at the cover the name of the group could be to translate into ‘are to B‘ – ‘being there’ and that’s what they do: splendid band!
