‘Open Me’ is een verhelderend album.

The Dutch North Sea Jazz Festival has been a place where a lot of jazz, world and pop music is programmed. Where musical boundaries and crossovers speak to the imagination. In this blog two highlights who will perform at the NSJF 2015; Ester Rada and Guillaume Perret.

The second album ‘Open Me’ by the French saxophonist Guillaume Perret (1980-Annecy) is a powerhouse album. With his group The Electric Epic he mixed rock, pop and electronic and adds samples while playing the (electrical) saxophone. He also adds effects that gives his sax different sounds somewhere inbetween sax, oboe or trumpet. Above all, there are some great distorted guitars added which gives the music a psychedelic effect. The first composition ‘Opening‘ is a series of enchanting atmospheres which via an ambient-like structure, a melody slowly distilled and moves almost ‘silently‘ into the energetic ‘Shoebox‘. ‘Irma’s Room‘ makes you feel like ‘dancing on clouds’, while (for instance) in ‘Ponk’ a subtle Ethiopian jazz sound is added with a surprising saxophone melody and whipping drums that range the music far above average. ‘Open Me‘ is a wonderful and enlightening album. Admittedly less innovative than you think at first, but when you are an adventurous listener, this album makes you smile inbetween all the mainstream!

Another artist who doesn’t make music in a specific style is the Jewish-Ethiopian singer Ester Rada. The last few years the Ethio-jazz got quite a lot of attention in the Netherlands by the band The Ex who recorded with musicians like saxophonist Getatchew Mèkurya and released albums on their Dutch label Terp Records with music by Bahru Kegne. Singer Ester Rada makes music which is even more progressive. She used reggae, pop, funk and r&b in her songs in which she sounds a little like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Rada has a fantastic sympathetic voice, sings catchy music, played by grooving musicians like the multi-instrumentalist Kutiman from Israel. But the most remarkable is her Ethiopian background that echoes so beautifully in her songs. Like a watermark the characteristic Ethiopian colour reflects in her music (eg ‘Out‘ or ‘Life Happens’) and gives it an unmistakable timbre. Ester Rada writes her own songs, sings in English and Amharic (Ethiopian language) and proves with her début album that Ethiopian music is a versatile addition to Western pop music.
