English version

Composing drummers are rare inside jazz and improvising music. Drummer Felix Schlarmann plays with a selected group of fine musician on his wonderful début ‘Counterlife’.

Felix Schlarmann (1982) was born in Germany and lives in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) for years now. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, took lessons with Martijn Vink (Anton Goudsmit) and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Schlarmann played in projects like Mechanical Duck with saxophone player Jasper Blom, the group of singer Norbert Køgging and he’s the drummer at the Millenium Jazz Orchestra (by Joan Reinders), who released their album ‘Safety Zone‘ this month. Above all, Schlarmann is co-organizer of Jazz Fest Amsterdam at Studio/K: a festival of jazz and improvising music from Amsterdam.

Now he released his début album ‘Counterlife’, under his own name. Schlarmann’s compositions are moving with edgy theme’s (‘One for Dave’), leaning on pop and rock. Melodic and tonal music, exciting arrangements with diving, contemporary theme’s. Although the music isn’t common, it sound really familiar. Quite catchy music with adventurous parts, played by wonderful musicians. The sparkling bass clarinet (and saxophone) of Floris van der Vlugt, together with the lovely saxophone sound of Lars Dietrich in the cinematic piece ‘Landscapes’ for example. The all-round and temperament piano of Franz von Chossy is often determining the ambiance, besides bass player Pat Cleaver and the dynamic moves of Felix Schlarmann. That makes ‘Counterlife’ worth listening over and over and turns it into a variable and fascinating album!
