In the sixties a lot of Peruvian people migrated from the mountains to the cities Lima (capital) and Arequipa, looking for work. In those days the chicha developed. The music from the youth which became very popular in the ’70 and ’80s, based on the cumbia. A tight percussive style from Colombia started on the beaches. Originated accompanied by percussion instruments and later bass, keyboards and brass were added. The chicha adds farfisa organ and surf guitars which gives the music it’s lovely smile.

El Cacique de Menkoremón (the chieftain of the Menkoremón) Y su Cuarteto Atalaino plays the cumbia Selvática (Jungle Cumbia). A style familiar to the chicha. The group plays at village parties in the jungle and give concerts until four in the mourning. Besides singer/guitarist Menko (sometimes out of tune) we hear bass guitar, drums & percussion from a box and strings from a keyboard. Exciting are the guitar sounds that gives the group the special timbre.

The group Juaneco Y su Combo plays the chicha from Lima. They started in the ’60’s. In 1977 half of the band died in a plane crash. The group re-established, played in different formations and became one the best chicha band from Perú. Juaneco sounds authentic with groovy surf guitars, farfisa organ, percussion, with the lovely (Cumbia) guiro. On this album you’ll find their début recorded in 1972 in a re-edit version.
