English version

The band Son Palenque comes originally from San Basilio del Palanque. A village in North East Colombia. About thirty years they play the exciting Afro-Colombian palenque music, led by Justo Valdez. ‘Afro-Colombian Sound Modernizers’ is the first compilation album of this nine piece band.

Palenque is originaly a music mix of African and Colombian rhythms, with a lot of lead and backing vocals, accompanied by rhythm instruments like guiro (rasp), marimbula (big thumb piano) and the tambora (drums). The music originally comes from San Basilio del Palanque where leader of Son Palenque Justo Valdez was born. As a ten year old boy he moved to Cartagena, a city on the Caribian Coast. Together with his village mates he started spontaneously in the ’80 his band Son Palenque. In the beginning the group wasn’t taken that serious because of their palenquera language: a mix of African language, Spanish and Portuguese. After their first concerts and their first single (the first in palenquera language) the group became a standard. The band also heard new African music like: soukous, highlife, mbaqanga, rumba and Afrobeat. They mixed it with palenque and added also saxophone and guitar. They gave concerts at the Barranquilla Carnaval and the song ‘El Sapo‘ (see YouTube above) became a big hit. After a record selling dip, the group started releasing albums at the end of 2012. The folklore record ‘Ma Kamajan ri Musika Palenque’ was released on which the band returns to their roots.

Son Palenque plays provocative music, based on lovely rhythms with a lot of solo and choir vocals that constantly change. The group has a dynamic image. In a Colombian background we hear the African echo, the precursor of the modern and so popular champeta. That’s how the band keeps the past alive and they become the Afro-Colombian Sound Modernizers.
