B. Leza overleed in 1958.

English version

B. Leza (Francisco Xavier da Cruz) is one of the most important composers from the Cape Verde. He was born in 1905 at the island Sao Vincente. He introduced the Brazilian halftone into the ‘morna‘ and innovates it to national music. In 1988 singer Titina recorded the L.P. ‘Titina canta B. Leza’,which was re-released in 2013.

B. Leza grew up in Mindelo, the capital and musicaly the most important city of the Cape Verde. After a short career as a navy officer, he chose for the music. In the fifties he became well known by several hits. Titina who lived next-door, learns B. Leza’s music and got even lessions from him. In 1988 she recorded the album ‘Titina canta B. Leza’, an hommage to this great Cape Verdian composer. On this records there are no hits like ‘Reposta do segredo cu mar’, ‘Miss Perfumado’ or ‘Lua Nha Testemunha’ but we hear beautiful other morna’s like Terra Longe’, ‘Galo Bedo’ and ‘Bejo de Sodade’. A song which connects the morna with the Portugese fado to a ‘morna-fado’. Titina sings with a tremolo voice which fit exactly to the morna. She easily sings the typical glissando which is the essence of the music. She has a warm en sympathetic voice who’s accompanied by the cavaquinho (kind of ukulele), piano, guitar and percussion. Remarkable is the soft voiced clarinet of Luís Modais which improvised around the theme’s. In the background we hear now and then strings and a choir. They put the morna unnecessary into a sentimental mood which is already in the music. B. Leza died in 1958. After a long illness he returned, in a wheelchair, back home. His music sounds like an echo through the archipelago and that’s where ‘Titina canta B. Leza’ beautiful fits into!
