English version below

Meesterlijk mooie cd!

English version

Already singer Elina Duni released two remarkable albums with Balkan music ‘Baresha‘ from 2007 and ‘Lume Lume‘ (2010), accompanied on piano, bass and drums. On this new (2012) recording ‘Matanë Malit’ (Behind the Mountains) she sings new and traditional songs from Albania in a jazz approach.

Elina Duni (1981) was born in Tirana, the capital of Albania. From her tenth she grew up in Geneva (Swiss). She studied vocal improvisation at the Bern Hochschule der Künste and worked for several musicals, movies and theater projects. The music of Albania kept it’s own identity at the dictatorship (’till 1991) and was hardly influenced by music from abroad. Melodies and the special curving voice at the end of a musical sentence (like in ‘Çelo Mezani‘) are recognizable in the Albanian music and the music of Elina Duni Quartet. The group plays a wonderful collection of Albanian songs with conviction and facility sung by Elina Duni. She has a flexible and sparkling voice: sometimes very thin and outshining in the high notes. Beautiful is the sober accompany on piano, bass and drums who follow the voice of Duni. Special are the muted piano and the hand-played-drums. A lot of the lyrics are political, in a way. Referring to the dictatorship when people married to break away, the forbidden music who was ’to jazzy’ (Erë pranevero) or the Arbëresh (Kjani trima): the South Italian living Albanian people. In this background the music does have a double feeling. Played wonderful and sung extremely well: it really carries me away. Brilliant album!
