De Vlaamse accordeonist Hartwin Dhoore legt zijn ziel bloot in de muziek op zijn nieuwe album Unfolding.

Verstild, dromerig, lyrisch, melodieus en filmisch. Ja, dat zijn wel kernwoorden voor de nieuwe CD Unfolding van de Vlaamse accordeonist Hartwin Dhoore. Hij speelt diatonische accordeon en wordt bijgestaan door een strijktrio: viool, altviool en cello. Een combinatie die uiterst geschikt is voor de ietwat melancholische muziek. Enkele stukken werden gecomponeerd in Estland, waar Hartwin woonde tussen 2015 en 2021. Deze werken weerspiegelen de schoonheid van de Estlandse natuur, waarmee een bijna meditatieve sfeer wordt gecreëerd. De strijkers-arrangementen zijn van pianist en dirigent Gabriel Hollander.

De strijkers ‘volgen’ de accordeon, die over het algemeen het middelpunt van de muziek blijft, terwijl de strijkers de stemming ondersteunen en benadrukken. De composities hebben een duidelijke structuur: het zijn of liedjes-zonder-woorden of ze dragen een thematisch fragment (met variaties) in zich, dat steeds wordt herhaald. Een doeltreffende compositietechniek die we ook tegenkomen in de muziek van Michael Nyman. In Floating horen we de fonetische vocalen van Emma Barton-Smith, net zoals in het slotstuk Nightfall, maar dan van zanger Mick Pedaja, terwijl in The Forest Knows Where You Are een ritmische sample meeklinkt die zorgt voor een prachtig, vervreemdend effect. Bijzonder zijn de strijkers- en accordeon-arpeggio’s in White Light, die worden afgewisseld met unisono- en legato-spel. Innemend mooi! In When at Ease horen we het mooie en subtiele gitaarwerk van Jeroen Geerinck, die ook verantwoordelijk is voor de opname en nabewerking.

Hartwin is een componist die componeert vanuit de melodie en deze met aandacht ontwikkelt tot een prachtige muzikale bloemlezing vol timbres, kleuren en nuances! De uitvoeringen op Unfolding zijn teder en mild van aard, waarbij crescendo’s achterwege blijven en waardoor de muziek zijn intiem en mijmerend karakter behoudt.

The Flemish accordionist Hartwin Dhoore bares his soul in the music on his new album Unfolding.

Quiet, dreamy, lyrical, melodic and cinematic. Yes, those are key words for the new CD Unfolding by Flemish accordionist Hartwin Dhoore. He plays diatonic accordion and is supported by a string trio: violin, viola and cello. A combination that is extremely suitable for the somewhat melancholic music. Some pieces were composed in Estonia, where Hartwin lived between 2015 and 2021. These works reflect the beauty of Estonian nature, creating an almost meditative atmosphere. The string arrangements are by pianist and conductor Gabriel Hollander.

The strings ‘follow’ the accordion, which generally remains the centre of the music, while the strings support and emphasise the mood. The compositions have a clear structure: they are either songs without words or carry a thematic fragment (with variations) within them, which is repeated over and over again. An effective composition technique that we also encounter in the music of Michael Nyman. In Floating we hear the phonetic vocals of Emma Barton-Smith, just like in the final piece Nightfall, but then by singer Mick Pedaja, while in The Forest Knows Where You Are a rhythmic sample resonates that provides a beautiful, alienated effect. Special are the string and accordion arpeggios in White Light, which are alternated with unison and legato playing. Endearingly beautiful! In When at Ease there’s beautiful and subtle guitar work of Jeroen Geerinck, who is also responsible for the recording and post-production.

Hartwin is a composer who composes from the melody and carefully develops it into a beautiful musical anthology full of timbres, colours and nuances! The performances on Unfolding are of a tender and gentle kind, with no crescendos. That’s why the music retains its intimate and fine contemplative character.
