Wat is er mooier dan één trombone? 25 trombones! En die krijg je op het nieuwe album Spartan Strong van trombonist Michael Dease en de MSU Jazz Trombones.

De Amerikaanse trombonist Michael Dease is een vakman op de jazz-trombone. Hij geeft les aan de Michigan State University waar hij een hele generatie nieuwe jazz-trombonisten opleidde. Enkele ervan zijn nu, samen met hem, te horen op zijn nieuwe album Spartan Strong en de MSU Jazz Trombones.

Het resultaat is muziek die je om de oren slaat. Je meezuigt in intieme arrangementen, latin (Huesos con Clave), koraal-melodieën in Remebrance. Er klinken opwindende arrangementen van jazz, zoals de schitterende bewerking van Monk’s ‘Round Midnight (met levendige complementaire ritmiek) en Evidence, dat door zijn thema-ontwikkeling en be-bop B-gedeelte (met prachtige piano-solo) een frisse kijk biedt op deze klassieker. Trombonist Slide Hampton (be-bop virtuoos) wordt herdacht in Frame for the Blues. Opvallend is de uitvoering van de jazz-funkrock compositie Some Skunk Funk. Jazzwerk van Randy Brecker. Een ingewikkeld stuk dat wordt uitgevoerd met doorgewinterde souplesse. Alle stukken worden begeleid door ritmesectie van piano, bas en drums (op het titelstuk na). Een mooie afwisseling is zanger Benny Benack III, die naast een voortreffelijk trombonist ook een verfijnd zanger is, met een heerlijk Mel Tormé-timbre. Hij schittert in It could happen to You waar hij zingt, scat en soleert op trombone.

Op het album staan veel werken van jazz-musici, waaronder saxofonist Benny Golson, contrabassist Oscar Pettiford, trombonist Slide Hampton en piano Thelonious Monk. Maar ook de compositie Song of those who seek van saxofoniste Sharel Cassity (1978). Een ritmisch werk met een dubbele laag, solistische fragmenten vol rijke thematiek.

Opvallend is ook het titelstukSpartan Strong (van Michael Davis). Een werk voor trombones, zonder ritme-sectie. Een indrukwekkende compositie met een klassieke inslag, orkestrale ornamenten en een doorwerking in veelzijdig speelse ritmiek.

Spartan Strong is een gevarieerd album waar Michael Dease met de MSU Jazz Trombones de veelzijdigheid van de trombone laat horen. Een trombone big-band met zo’n twee-dozijn trombones zoals je ze zelden hoort, die je alle hoeken van het muzikaal firmament laten horen!

What do you like more than one trombone? 25 trombones! And that is exactly what you get on the new album Spartan Strong by trombonist Michael Dease and the MSU Jazz Trombones.

American trombonist Michael Dease is a master of the jazz trombone. He works at Michigan State University, where he has taught an entire generation of new jazz trombonists. Some of them can now be heard, together with him, on his new album Spartan Strong and the MSU Jazz Trombones.

The result is great music that really hits you. It draws you in with intimate arrangements, Latin (Huesos con Clave) and choral melodies in Remembrance. Exciting arrangements of jazz can be heard, such as the brilliant rendition of Monk’s ‘Round Midnight (with lively complementary rhythms) and Evidence, which, through its theme development and bebop B-section (with a beautiful piano solo), offers a fresh perspective on this classic. Trombonist Slide Hampton (bebop virtuoso) is commemorated in Frame for the Blues. The performance of the jazz-funk-rock composition Some Skunk Funk by Randy Brecker is striking. It is a complex piece performed with seasoned finesse. All pieces are accompanied by a rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums (except for the title track). A nice change of pace is singer Benny Benack III, who is not only an excellent trombonist but also a refined singer, with a delightful Mel Tormé timbre. He shines in It Could Happen to You, where he sings, scat and play a solo on trombone. 

The title track Spartan Strong (by Michael Davis) is also noteworthy. A work for trombones, without a rhythm section. An impressive composition with a classical craft, orchestral ornaments and a development into versatile, playful rhythms.

Spartan Strong is a varied album where Michael Dease, together with the MSU Jazz Trombones, show the versatility of the trombone. A trombone big band of about two dozen trombones like you rarely hear. They show you every corner of the musical firmament!
