Luca Scardovelli is een Italiaanse gitarist/ componist die zich na (progressieve) rock en blues geleidelijk ontwikkelde richting jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek. Hij studeerde (master) aan het A. Pedrollo Conservatorium in Vicenza en aan het Modern Music Institute. Een muziekopleiding waar hij nu zelf gitaar, compositie en sounddesign doceert. Daarnaast nam hij privélessen bij o.a. Gilad
Hekselman en Reinier Baas. Hij bracht cd’s uit met het Luca Scardovelli Trio, het kwartet Ndovu en een duoproject met zangeres Martina Ghibellini.

Op dit solo-album Boring Music for Busy Minds verkent hij het universum met gelaagde sound designs. Soms heel subtiel (Heart of a Samurai) dan weer overduidelijk zoals in Aftermatch, waar een complete soundscape los staat van het gitaarspel. Hierdoor ontstaat er een prachtige dubbele laag in de muziek, die niet alleen vervreemdend werkt maar ook de fantasie prikkelt. Iets soortgelijks gebeurt er ook in Dissolving, waar (random) hoge tonen, als fonkelende sterren, het gitaar-firmament beschijnen en je even meenemen de ruimte in.

De composities zijn een vertelling, een patchwork van kleurrijke muzikale verhalen waar weliswaar de gitaar centraal staat, die steeds wordt vergezeld door effecten zoals gitaarspel-achterste-voren-afgespeeld (Hanami), galmen, tremolo en vette distortion, zoals in Penrose Paradox waar een fuzzy gitaarsolo scheurt over ostinato, gedempte gitaarpartijen.

Toch is door het scala aan originele muziek duidelijk de invloed van Bill Frisell hoorbaar. Een gitarist die de laatste jaren met tremolo en galm (ook) de subtiliteit opzoekt en met weinig noten, veel vertelt, zoals Scardovelli dat doet in Peacefull Trail. Een werk met warm, strelend solo- en akkoorden-werk.

Boring Music for Busy Minds (Saaie Muziek voor Drukke Gedachten) is een origineel album waarop Luca Scardovelli het universum prikkelt met een warme gitaar-signatuur, gelardeerd met soundscapes en effecten, die allerminst ‘saai‘ te noemen zijn, maar wél uiterst geschikt is voor het tot rust brengen van ‘drukke gedachten‘.

The Italian guitarist Luca Scardovelli (1989) explores the musical universe with spatial sounds.

Luca Scardovelli is an Italian guitarist/composer who, after (progressive) rock and blues, gradually developed his music towards jazz and improvised music. He studied (Master’s) at the A. Pedrollo Conservatory in Vicenza and at the Modern Music Institute, a music education institution where he now teaches guitar, composition and sound design himself. Additionally, he took private lessons with Gilad
Hekselman and Reinier Baas, among others. He has released CDs with the Luca Scardovelli Trio, the quartet Ndovu and a duo project with singer Martina Ghibellini.

On this solo album Boring Music for Busy Minds, he explores the universe with layered sound designs. Sometimes very subtle (Heart of a Samurai), then again very obvious, as in Aftermatch, where a complete soundscape stands apart from the guitar playing. This creates a beautiful double layer in the music, which not only has an alienating effect but also stimulates the imagination. Something similar happens in Dissolving, where (random) high notes illuminate the guitar firmament like twinkling stars, briefly taking you into space.

The compositions are narrative, a patchwork of colorful musical stories in which the guitar takes center stage, but is consistently accompanied by effects such as guitar playing played backwards (Hanami), reverb, tremolo, and heavy distortion, as in Penrose Paradox, where a fuzzy guitar solo tears across ostinato and muted guitar parts.

Nevertheless, the influence of Bill Frisell is clearly audible through the array of original music. A guitarist who, in recent years, has also sought subtlety with tremolo and reverb, telling a lot with a few notes, just as Scardovelli does in Peaceful Trail. A work featuring warm, caressing solo and chord work.

Boring Music for Busy Minds is an original album on which Luca Scardovelli stimulates the universe with a warm guitar signature laced with soundscapes and effects, which is not ‘boring’ at all and highly suitable for calming ‘busy thoughts’.
