Op het nieuwe album Meeting the Four speelt het kwartet Evening Sky uit Rhode Island (VS) een doorgewinterde mix van diverse stijlen.

Het kwartet Evening Sky komt dus uit Rhode Island (in de buurt van New York City) en bestaat uit: gitarist Gino Rosati, Chris Brooks op pedal steelgitaar, bassist Joe Potenza en drummer Eric Hastings, die ook hammondorgel en moog (synthesizer) speelt. Ze werkten samen met diverse gastmuzikanten en vocalisten en komen nu met het nieuwe en instrumentale album Meeting the Four. Een album ter kennismaking voor dit in Europa minder bekende kwartet.

Opvallend voor Evening Sky is hoe coherent de muziek, de composities en de arrangementen zijn. Allemaal eigen stukken die zich als een patchwork moeiteloos bewegen over een scale aan stijlen als surf, reggae, funk, jazz, country, rock en Americana, over en door elkaar heen.

Spaarzaam gebruik van effecten (wat galm, tremolo en lichte vervorming) en transparante arrangementen zorgen voor pakkende muziek. De openingscompositie For Ernest beweegt over een reggae-landschap met warme surf-gitaar, dat licht wordt herhaald in Wanskuckin’. In Mysterious Wisteria klinkt een prachtige pedal steelgitaar-solo, met fraaie akkoorden in het B-gedeelte. Drummer Hastings valt op door zijn heerlijke laid-back-timing, waarmee hij samen met bassist Potenza zorgt voor een stevig en bloemrijk fundament (lekker funky in Ballz Out en Excellent Question, met jazz-rock invloeden), hier en daar aangevuld met ghost-notes. Mooi is de tweestemmige gitaarsolo in Coffee Monster die van complementaire naar simultaan overgaat. Blue Leisure Suit zou zo een jazz-standard kunnen zijn dat met zijn dwingende ritmiek en pakkend gitaar-thema (mooi versierd door pedal-steel) opvallend is. De melodieuze pedal steelgitaar- en gitaarsolo in Sunday Afternoon bieden een mooie album-afsluiting.

Evening Sky is werkelijk een fantastisch en veelzijdig kwartet. Vier musici die hun instrument goed beheersen en zonder egotripperij spelen in ‘dienst-van-de-muziek’. Deze mannen moeten goede vrienden zijn, want uit alles blijkt dat ze op liefdevolle en vooral ontspannen wijze elkaar muzikaal de ruimte geven, elkaar aanvullen en uitdagen. De perfecte kennismaking met Meeting the Four.

The quartet Evening Sky hails from Rhode Island (near New York City) and consists of guitarist Gino Rosati, Chris Brooks on pedal steel guitar, bassist Joe Potenza, and drummer Eric Hastings, who also plays Hammond organ and Moog (synthesizer). They have worked with various guest musicians and vocalists and are now releasing the new instrumental album Meeting the Four. For this lesser-known quartet in Europe, the album Meeting the Four is indeed a wonderful introduction.

It is striking how coherent the music, compositions and arrangements are. All original pieces move effortlessly like a patchwork across a range of styles like surf, reggae, funk, jazz, country, rock, and Americana, intertwining and overlapping one another.

Spare use of effects (some reverb, tremolo and light distortion) and transparent arrangements create catchy music. The opening composition For Ernest moves across a reggae landscape with warm surf guitar, which is subtly repeated in Wanskuckin’. In Mysterious Wisteria, a beautiful pedal steel guitar solo is heard with lovely chords in the B-section. Drummer Hastings stands out with his delightful laid-back timing, with which he and bassist Potenza provide a solid and flowery foundation (nice and funky in Ballz Out and Excellent Question, with jazz-rock influences), supplemented here and there by ghost notes. The two-part guitar solo in Coffee Monster, transitioning from complementary to simultaneous, is really beautiful. Blue Leisure Suit could easily be a jazz standard, standing out with its compelling rhythm and catchy guitar theme (beautifully embellished by pedal steel). The pedal-melodic steel guitar and guitar solos in Sunday Afternoon offer a lovely album conclusion.

Evening Sky is truly a fantastic and versatile quartet. Four musicians who have mastered their instruments and play without ego in the ‘service of the music’. These men must be good friends, because everything indicates that they give each other musical space, complement and challenge each other in a loving and, above all, relaxed manner. The perfect way for Meeting the Four.
