Het Pools/ Servisch kwartet Slavyk combineert op theatrale wijze folk met pop.

Het kwartet Slavyk bestaat uit het samengaan van twee duo’s: Alice in WonderBand uit Servië en het Poolse Cisi. Op hun debuut-album 11 Songs of Love & Suffering spelen ze hun eigen werk niet alleen in een zeer originele setting, maar ook de arrangementen zijn avontuurlijk, fris en origineel. Het viertal bestaat uit de zangeressen Julia Lewandowska en Ana Vrbaški, die naast zingen ook zorgen voor body-percussie en pianospel. Ze worden bijgestaan door Marko Dinjaški en Łukasz Malok die een heel arsenaal aan instrumenten bedienen, waaronder gitaar, banjo, mandoline, (contra)bas, xylofoon, didgeridoo en accordeon.

De veelal meerstemmige vocalen van Lewandowska en Vrbaški krullen om elkaar heen, wisselen elkaar af en complementeren elkaar, gelardeerd met solo-werk. De stemmen klinken helder, met subtiel vibrato en fraai in de hoogte. Deze worden rijkelijk versierd in gekleurde arrangementen waar het instrumentarium zeer gevarieerd wordt gebruikt. Zonder drums of percussie (alleen body-percussie) is de muziek verrassend ritmisch waarbij de verschillende instrumenten over en door elkaar heen lijken te duikelen, dat je soms het idee krijgt: waar luister ik eigenlijk naar en wat hoor ik allemaal. Heerlijk! De partijen grijpen als een puzzel in elkaar en vormen een muzikaal labyrint met unieke combinaties. En dat is nou precies de kracht van Slavyk die teksten in het Engels, Pools en Servisch heeft voorzien van originele melodieën die schuren tegen folk (volksmuziek), popmuziek en dat alles met een theatrale uitstraling.

Als dit kwartet live zo’n show maakt als het op CD klinkt, moet het geweldig zijn om een concert bij te wonen waar je dan ogen-en-oren tekort komt.

The Polish/Serbian quartet Slavyk theatrically combines folk with pop.

The quartet Slavyk is the result of a merger between two duos: Alice in WonderBand from Serbia and the Polish Cisi. On their debut album 11 Songs of Love & Suffering, they not only perform their own work in a highly original setting, but the arrangements are also adventurous, fresh, and original. The quartet consists of singers Julia Lewandowska and Ana Vrbaški, who, in addition to singing, also provide body percussion and piano playing. They are supported by Marko Dinjaški and Łukasz Malok, who play a wide arsenal of instruments including guitar, banjo, mandolin, (double) bass, xylophone, didgeridoo and accordion.

The often multi-layered vocals of Lewandowska and Vrbaški intertwine, alternate and complement one another, interspersed with solo work. The voices sound clear, with subtle vibrato and a beautiful high register. They are richly embellished in colorful arrangements where the instrumentation is used in a highly varied manner. Without drums or percussion (only body percussion), the music is surprisingly rhythmic, with the various instruments seemingly tumbling over and through one another, sometimes leaving you wondering: what am I actually listening to or what am I hearing? Lovely! The parts interlock like a puzzle, forming a musical labyrinth with unique combinations. And that is precisely the strength of Slavyk, who has provided lyrics in English, Polish, and Serbian with original melodies that border on folk and pop music, all with a theatrical flair.
